Supercharge 4AGE

Some time ago I read a thread about supercharging a 4AGE with a rotrex supercharger. Interesting reading....

I was thinking of something similar but am in totaly new teretory. I have a 4AGE silvertop attached to a Ford type 9 gearbox with an Omex 500 ECU. I a not looking to go for the full 260 / 270 Bhp but mostly for more torque and 220 Bhp or so...

Some of the questions I have now:
* Would I need to change anything to the engine or can it handle the extra power without modifications?
* Will the gearbox survive all this?
* Do I need a new ECU?
* What type of supercharger would I need?
* Can I do all of this myself?
* And of course the money thing.... is this going de very expensive?

In short, is there a dummy guide to supercharging a 4AGE?

Thanks....

Might be easier to start with a 4agze as it has the mods done for you.

Just be careful what you read in forums They're talking about putting pretty lary cams on a supercharged motor. Which usually is actually a often not such a good idea.

On a NA engine a wild overlap means you get good exhaust discharge even if the cost is some of the inlet charge coming out at the same time, meaning you've got unburnt fuel (= money) in the exhaust system.

On a blown engine, you're relying on the blower building pressure up inside the cylinder. Having the exhaust valve open way after the inlet valve opens actually prevents this from happening.....

....which is why cars which suit blowing well are usually quite sedate engines. Low compression, conservative cams etc. Engines already chucking out a fair wack of BHP / litre often have higher CRs and more aggressive cams making them not such an attractive.

So the paradox is you're looking ideally for a low compression engine with conservative cam that's built like a brick poo house and can take huge amounts of power....

Personally I'd buy the 4agze

That would be my Striker with the Rotrex'd Silvertop 4AGE 20V. I wasn't intentionally aiming for that power but it just worked very well. Though I would like to think that was also down to some of my engine preparation. No problems yet after a couple of months and a couple thousand miles. My ECU constatly logs data so I regularly check for any anomolies.

One of my previous installs was a 7AGZE (4AGZE with an 1800cc block) with flowed head and 272 HKS cams. That achieved 210HP from the less efficient SC12 roots blower (the factory supplied one). The torque delivery would have been quite sudden for a light RWD car so I prefer my current setup.

OMEX are currently finishing off their version of the Rotrex install. So they will probably be offering a kit as a result for the 20V engines.

The easy answer for more bottem end torque is to fit an inlet restrictor on the Rotrex. This would allow you to fit a smaller pulley on the Rotrex and speed it up at low RPM. The high RPM boot is then limited, not ideal but one of doing it.
