Tintop has lost power

A mate at work has a Vectra 2.0 DTi that has lost power and can barely make it to 60mph top speed. When you try and accelerate it just slowly picks up speed getting to 60mph after a couple of minutes. My first thought was the turbo had died but I can feel pressure throught the intercooler hose when the engine is revved. I can also see the waste gate actuator arm moving at the same time. We have also had the EGR valve out and confirmed that it also works and have checked all hoses and vacuum pipes for the turbo and EGR. I dont know what else to check now as I am not very familiar with Vectras, is there anyone out there with any ideas as to what has gone wrong?

Cheers,

Paul

Possibly the MAF sensor, I have the same car.
Mine went dodgy.If it is the problem try LMF Vauxhall for the part, much cheaper than the dealer when I got mine.

Sounds like it has gone into limp mode, usual cause is an oiled up crank sensor, means a trip to the main dealer for a diagnostic and fault code reset and pay what ever figure they pluck from the air. (sorry)

If you can keep you head, whilst all others around you are losing theirs, you are not fully aware of the situation

Do you think the MIL would be on if had gone into LOS?
Steve.

MIL = malfunction indicator lamp
LOS = limited operation strategy;

boost control solenoid on the ns inner wing behind the headlight,there are two that look identical its the front one that fails and it doesnt put the mil light on when it goes wrong but a scanner with live data will show it up

If it were a Rover I would go straight for a faulty MAF sensor
However worth getting the fault codes read and cleared before doing anything -- Opel/Vauxhall Diesels are only EOBD post 2003

Thanks for all the replies. For some reason it sorted itself out today - back to normal power levels (for a diesel). Only thing my mate did yesterday was to drive it with the EGR solenoid vacuum pipe disconnected for a while. At one point he dropped it down a cog and floored it, there was a large puff of black smoke out the back and he thought he had buggered it completely. Last night he reconnected the EGR jobbie and it seems fine now.

Very strange. Any way he is off to Cornwall this weekend. If he makes it to work on Tuesday I guess the problem is sorted.
