Engine running too cold?
I am running a Toyota 4AGE 20V silvertop ith OMEX 500 ECU and it doesn't want to run idle until it gets @85 degrees. When driving and picking up
the wind it doesn't get any hotter then 82 degrees. I have an oilcooler installed and am wondering that is causing the
"problems"....
Any tips??

has your oil cooler got a stat inline.

From what little you said it sounds like your warm up map in the OMEX isn't correct until it reaches 85 deg when it probably swiches to the main
map.
Test your thermostat by heating some water in a pan and dip the stat in it. Preferable with a thermometer in the water as it should start to open at
82 deg. My Silvertop stat was knackered when I got it and opened too early.
The oil cooler shouldn't be able to cool the engine that much alone. However a thermostat sandwich plate would be better.

Actually 82 deg isn't too cold but how quickly does the temp get to 82 deg. Should be quite quick just a few minutes on the 20Vs.

It sounds like your thermostat is stuck open to me.

Hey all,
No way the 20v will reach 82 degrees when the thermostat is stuck open! 70 seems more like it. 82 degrees is perfectly normal for a mechanicly healthy
4age, my 16V was at 83degrees all day and the 20v runs 3degrees hotter.
That's in the mapping somewhere as in ECU related or ITB related.
I have the exact same set-up as you have, and mine's running idle from stone cold, it's not happy when it's stone cold and not
running above 800rpm's, but hey neither do I at that point.
are you running a MAP? probably not, I fiddled with the throttle opening for a few weeks until it was finaly right.
But needed to do additional mapping also to get it running and keeping it running.
it''s probalby in the cold start map or in the basics map of the omex you can determine there what happens when below a certain temp.
check if the ignition advance is 10degrees BTDC at 1000rpm. if it's not off by a mile it should be fine
first set the cold start enrichment map de-activation to 65degrees, then open the screen: "cold start", set the 20degrees enrichment to
175% keep deminishing that till 65degrees has 105%(just equal out globaly) and set the "target IdleRPM" at 1050rpm and "Idle
on" at 800 and "Idle of" at 1100 try again to get it running if not, give it a little more air on the ITB's you can do that by
loosening the 4 flathead screws you can see when you take of the plastic trumpets, give all of them the same amount if you can't get enough air
in like I did try option 2: there's a very little screw in the middle of the 2 pairs of ITB's which has a locknut on it that one is used
to alter all 4 throttles at the same time, leave the others alone because those are used to balance the ITB's which is normaly setup very well),
so that it runs around 800-1000rpm. If it won't run ad a little fuel in the mainmaps "fuel map" at the rpm the engine is at when it
stalls,
let the engine warm up to 65 degrees if it stalls before, again a little more fuel or air will help, if you you want you can rev it a few times and
see how it falls back to idle, a lot of times the ITB's will not fall back to Idle but stay at higher rpm you'll then have to much air and
need to turn back the screw. the ECU keeps Idle rpm by altering the ignition timing but when the engine won't go below 2000rpm the ECU
won't recognise the engine sits at Idle unless you alter the Idle Off value to this RPM, but thing will get real, tricky when you encounter a
traffic jam once and need to drive really slow.... hahaha. there's no real provision for the fine tuning of the throttle valve opening to get a
good idle because on the stock ECU there's a idle stepper motor mounted which unfortunatly the Omex 500 can't controll.
when it's running OK get a friend or a shop to check the balance of the Vacuum in the ITB's with a gauge,
just keep fidling till it is right. the rpm is quite hard to get OK in both cold and warm situations, don't really care about 800rpm when cold
because as Justin says the 20v warms up in litteraly a few minutes. mine stays below 88degrees no matter what when driving. fan is on at 95 and off at
87.
if you want someone to take a look at the maping, just save it on the computer that is attachached to the ECU and email to justin or me I wonder if
something is at fault.
just wait a few years to realtime technology comes through, we could then remap eachothers ECU from the other side of the globe.... via mobile phone
driving on the road using the Butt dynometer... hahahaha that would be brilliant
