Honda CBR Big End Bearings
Ah, 7s know how to keep you on your toes....
Been on the road for about 2 days and the big ends go!
I kinda knew it was going to happen after a mishap really early on in the build meant that I ran for an agonising minute or maybe longer with no oil
at all and after that the oil pressure warning light wouldnt go out unless the revs were over 2000rpm - not good!
Anyway, my stripdown reveals what I had suspected that the knocking noise was indeed the big ends and although there is no distinguishable play in any
other con-rod, number 2s big end has bit the big one!
I remember Guinness saying that he got quoted for bits from the Kwacker dealer but is there a good place to source bearing shells other than the main
dealer?
Also - having checked the crank all looks well and there arent any visible signs of scoring or anything too nasty - whats teh score then? Do I just
bash in me new bearing shells and away I go or what?
Its just too easy and therefore cant be right!
Any thoughts or advice gladly received!
Also - no-one wants to see the engines mulllered guts do they?
Just wondeirng....!
Cheers

your best to get it reground then the bearing to match. it doesnt cost much and its not worth taking the risk you have been lucky. when my rs big end
went it put a rod out the block lol.

Hi Geoff
Guess you spent the weekend taking the engine out?!!
Sorry to hear it's bust, but at least you know what the problem is. Don't forget new bolts for the rods? I know the kwak is one use
bolts for the crank. Guess honda would be the same?
Cheers

At the risk of being totally wrong.
If it's just plain bearing then it's just another crank.
It may be worth enquiring at your local machine shop about micing up the crank for you and taking it from there.

When I last looked for my CBR1100 (bird) engine, oversized bearings weren't available! Hence why no-on repairs them. I hope you're lucky
though with yours.

Yep, the CBR1000 may be different as its older but certainly with the Blade, oversized bearings weren't available either, and you can't
machine the crank because of the coating / treatment done to it.
If you really have got away without damaging the crank at all then you can get new bearings from Honda, although you'll need to look on the
inside of the existing ones to find a size mark as if its anything like the blade, there are 4 or 5 standard bearing sizes each within a few thou of
each other simply so they can build the engines with as tight tolerences as possible.
