lazy diff question

hi,is possible to work the diff ratio of an english axle without counting teeth
ie if i turn roadwheel 1 revolution the drive flange rotates just under 2 revolutions(starting at12 o'clock it finnishes at 11 o'clock).
any ideas or have i got to drop axle out and get a new gasket.
thanks andy

1 turn of the road wheel gives the result by counting the number of turns of the diff flange. I think...

you can do it either way, but multiply it up to ten turns, trying to do it in one turn is pretty vague.

yes it is.

counitng a fraction of a prop or wheel
turn is not that easy so for more accurate results, you need to do repeate the turning 10 or more times then compare to known diff ratios.

ofcourse dropping the diff out would give exact answer, gaskets are cheap but postage would be £££ relatively, then sod's law means that you'll round off nuts or worse shear a stud, forget to drain the diff so get oil every where, then find there is no enough room to get the diff out due to propshaft etc...

then you'll rip the gasket fitting it so get 2 or more, like I just writ, cheap but postage is the killer.

I think it is clear which is the better method

Don't forget the planet gears halve or double the turns depending on which bit you spin, sounds like a diff in the hgh three's to me.

The Haynes manual has the 1600 mark 2 escort coming with a 3.54 diff. 1300s came with 3.89, 4.125,4.11 or 4.44.

1100 used the speedier ratios too.

So according to the manual yours should be a 3.54 unless someone swapped it for another for faster acceleration and lower top speed when it was on the Escort.
