Best engine?

Hi all,
I know this is a very general question and that many of you will have varied opinions...
I already have a stright 6 engine out of an '89 BMW 325i in my garage, kind of in need of a rebuild and not too sure it's going to fit in a standard chassis so might use it for the next car. So, in the mean time I was thinking of getting another engine for the car. I was thinking of a 2.0l zetec out of a mondeo due to it's price on ebay and availability. I need something that is easy to drive around town but goes like hell when I get out to the country roads...and reliability would be a bonus .
I was wondering how easy it would be to get this into the standard size locost...what transmission to use...how easy it is to tune...price of tuning...etc.?
Or if anyone has any other suggestions on what engine I should look at and what prices we're talking about. Looking for bargain bhp!
Thanks everyone.

A Zetec will fit fine into a standard chassis and as its sooooo widely used you can get loads of off the shelf parts which keeps the cost down. You will need to look at modifying the sump (£), or buying a modified (££) or cast (£££) sump. Mate this to a Ford Sierra type 9 box via a 1.8 zetec flywheel (much lighter than a 2L flywheel) and then source whatever fueling you fancy depending on budget - weber's / bike carbs / throttle bodies etc with a suitable ECU.

Standard 2.0 zetec should give 165bhp or so with tuning parts available should you want more.

Other engines you might want to consider are the 1.6L Toyota 4-age, Vauxhall, maybe a Ford Pinto but really think the Zetec is really good compromise on per £

I would also say zetec. Fairly reliable and quite easily tunable

How long can i resist the temptation to drop a V8 in?
