small engine

can anyone suggest a good engine about a 1000cc for my soon to be built locost?

How about a Reliant 850 if you don't want a bike engine? Ain't fast, but similar horsepower to the 1100 XF? (45bhp)

Very light, very revvy, can easilly take a supercharger (had this setup on my first Locost). Normal tuning (needs porting, and a 1.75" SU from a Range Rover) will give you 55-60bhp and dirt cheap insurance.

You get dirt cheap insuranace with ANY locost. Even a 150 bhp bike engine is only around £150 fully comp, and a 100bhp pinto is around £90 (35 yrs old).

That's nowt compared to my current build, which is a 4.8 Dax Rush Quadra. Most of the companies I have spoken to don't seem to care about the power output, they're only interested if the terms V8, Cosworth, any age under 25, or points figure in the conversation. One person I spoke to at Ade Flux didn't seem to care whether I had a zetec or a Ford V6, the V6 would be more expensive to insure than the Zetec :-O

I've heard good things about Footman James for us younguns. My Cabrio and XR2 are insured with Sterling (via Hyperformance) who quoted me about a third of what most companys were.

Yeah, and for bog-standard cars, the Co-op seems to be pretty damned good. Except I don't own a "normal" car

The NFU are also best for 4x4s

Back to the reliant, good choice, the buggers are little screamers and loads a tuning bit's too, what about Imp ? or even the good old "A" series.......as cilla would say........its your choice....

Never thought about Imp. I always stuck to what I knew would work with an off-the-shelf RWD 'box, hence Mi16 Pug (this 'un belongs to a friend), Ford 1.8 Tdi, Reliant, CVH turbo, V8.

I'm intrigued by the A series, as the later A+ metro turbo looks interesting. These engines supposedly had a proper box, instead of one in the sump a la Mini? This means you could use a Spriget box, and we all know Frontline Spriget do a conversion for the Ford Type 9.

Damn, that's another project penciled in on the list.....

flux best 4 me on locost..£130 blade
esure best for tin top...£230 Primera....i know i'll get sum stick now for the grandadmobile......it is the sri though

Best quote for me on my current Dax Rush V8 (age 22) is £1470!

Car is better, Ade Flux, Mk5 Escort, fitted 2.0 Zetec, throttle bodies, coil over suspension, close cut box et. £699

Unfortunately I pay a price for my compatriots in their knackered 1.2 Novas with plastic stick on tat

god...6 locosts to insure a dax rush, there was a guy at the yorks meeting wed with a 3.9 V8 rover in his locost.....he was paying £150ish....looked i hope he's not reading this (mid 30's) can't remember which company, i know where ya coming from though, i have a 20 year old son, does he get hammered or wot !!!!!! funny thing is, he is a much safer driver than a lot of these gray rinse sunday drivers out there......

I know where you're coming from. I've just finished my seventh and last locost build, and am now onto Daxes.

Not sure I like the sound of a 3.9 in a locost frame though. Is it just me that thinks Ronnie was looking a little closely at an early Westfield SE chassis?

are you talking about a hillman imp rear angine thing? if you are ive got an 875cc in my shed(it belongs to my grandad, he may lend it to me). does anybody have any idea what gearbox i could use with it?

go mid mounted ?......just like in the imp ? failing that make an adaptor plate to suit the box of your choice.......same goes for any fwd motor too.......

I owned a metro turbo for six years. A lot of that was when it was being rebuilt after someone hit it when parked. Was kinda my prior experience to building a locost.

The metro turbo has a STANDARD gearbox. The rumor is they blow every 25k with 3rd gear going first.

The engine is verry revvy, has no rev limit, so can be easily wrecked. The turbo only really comes on at 500rpm from top. Then, it only has 4 gears and screams like shyte at top speed of 114mph and if you are brave will pass that.

93bhp.

compare that to a gti later metro with 95hp, ready available bellhouings and stuff for a rwd.

I wouldnt choose the turbo engine.

a standard 1275 is good for 71hp and dont wreck things.

Hmmm, That's a shame. I always thought they used the VW gearbox like the Maestro did. Would have been nice to try the turbo in RWD on a Sierra gearbox. I suppose you could always strip one and rebuild itinto a Marina crankcase, but that seems like a lot of work, just for a play around......

The Talbot sunbeam used a 930cc variant of the imp engine mated to a rear wheel drive box, there are still some new blocks and short engines around but no surviving cars.It would fit quite nicely and could use standard imp tuning parts, the engine is very much like the coventry climax used in some rare series 1 lotus sevens.

Nope. They have the sump type box thats basically made for 40hp and has to take 93! They dont like it.

However, as has been said in another posting, you can get A series RWD boxes from midgets, so it you can make it fit, its a lively engine!
