O/T Cavalier TD starting issues....

My chum has just phoned me because his 93 1.7TD Cav has been tricky to start on a morning and this morning he had to tow it the length of his street to get it to start. When the car does start, it billows out black smoke for a few hundred yards. The car seems to start OK for the rest of the day.
He's had new heater plugs fitted and a new air filter.
I seem to recall these engines having issues with EGR valves but I can't remember if they are easy to get to!!
What else could it be? I'm off to have a look at it soon and as it's pouring with rain, I'd like to know how to fix it in a few seconds without having to open the bonnet. Or get out of my car.....

egr or air getting into fiel lines check returs from injectors and that the injectors are in tight

If it's the Isuzu engine, these have a known problem with the valves pocketing into the head and closing up the valve clearances (vauxhall recommend doing the valve clearances on these engine every 20K). If it is the Isuzu engine my first step would be to get the shims replaced with shims of the correct thickness (that bit is usually the hard bit because the valves can pocket that much that you have no or negative valve clearance so that removal and measuring of the old ones is only the first of several steps and the shims aren't cheap) and thereby the valve clearances reset.

The symptoms you describe sound like it is the Isuzu engine problem.

I agree with jolly green. If its izuzu check this. Its very common on higher mileage ones.

Failing that are the glow plugs actually coming?? It might be the glow plug relay/timer not actually turning them on. Put a volt meter on them.

Where will I find the EGR? That seems to be the cheapest thing to try.....

And more importantly, why would a knackered EGR effect the way the engine started as derv engines only suck air not air/fuel?

id eliminate the glow plugs first feed them direct from the battery

But feeding them with 12v would pop them as they are only 9(ish)volts.......

No they take 12 volts quite comfortably.

Oh and the cheapest option is the use of a feeler blade to check the valve clearances.
Cost = Nothing if I am wrong.
and correct diagnosis if I am right.

Nothing is quite as cheap as doing the correct job first time.

Cyl no.1 has no clearance on the ex valve and the others have very little!
Still bemused by the EGR valve. I can't see one and don't see how a dodgy one would effect a derv engine. Not that it matters anymore.....

A duff EGR is unlikely to affect starting, but it can cause significant performance loss when running.

Starting problems in diesels are most always down to glow plugs, compression, pump timing or air in fuel.

Shims are dead easy to change, you just need to be able to work out what they need to be exchanged for. The shims that come out 'should' have the thickness marked on them. Subtract the clearance you need from the marked thickness (or measured) and you should be in the right area. refit new shim and remeasure then adjust as required. Your best bet is to find a friendly Vauxhall mechanic who will possibly have a good selection of shims to hand.

To remove shims push down on either side of the shim on the lips of the bucket walls and whip old shim out with magnet. Refit in reverse procedure.

The egr wont affect the starting. It just wont rev when it is started and smoke like a goodun.
