zetec on a budget
back to considering an engine swap (again) and the zetec just keeps coming up as its so cheap and plentiful.
Id have to use the 1,8 to keep the height down but have a few questions on what Id need to do to the engine once I bought it. It will be an ongoing
project during the first half of 08 while I gather up the bits etc.
So Im guessing I need:
- an engine
- 2L cams?
- bellhousing adapter for type-9 box?
- clutch + flywheel?
Can I get away with running twin 40s? As I have these already. Im not sure I could be bothered with megajolting etc but if its the best way then
maybe.
Lastly what kind of power can you see from the engine without spending a fortune? Ive a fairly racy 2.1 pinto at the minute but not really wanting to
spend any more money on it. Really could do with 45s to match the cam better but Im thinking the money might be better in a lighter revvy engine. Car
is mostly for tracking.

The Zetec bolts straight to the existing T9 bell housing, you just need to fit the correct clutch and release bearing.
You will need to use megajolt with the twin 40's as it is going to drive the coil pack.

if using 1.8 zetec it will bolt on to type 9
you can keep the 1.8 clutch
you will need a spigot bearing
and a pinto release bearing
also a cvh starter

Biggest cost will be the exhaust manifold.

The full cost looks more like this:
engine (from a escort! not mondeo)
2l cams (optional but recommended and must be delivered with the followers)
inlet manifold for the DCOE's
Megajolt for ignition (no dizzy on zetec)
exhaust manifold
clutch (do a search on here and you'll find the correct one)
release bearing (same as above, search)
sierra DOHC or 1.8CVH starter motor LRS707 rings a bell
spigot bearing (again a search or a INA HK1518RS bearing is the same or a needle bearing with 21mmx15mmx18mm measurements)
small size oil filter (do a search, but a filter for a yr2000 fiesta 1.25 16v fits)
Type 9 gearbox if not already in you possession
And if you need the GB then also a new or altered propshaft
small size alternator if needed and different size auxiliary belt
If you change camshafts, then also change the timing belt

A CVH manifold can be modified to fit - they occasionally come up on the Westfield Forum for reasonable money.

The twin 40's will run it just nicely. zetec twin manifolds come up on ebay all the time. The megajolt for the ign.
Get an engine from an escort and youl get the right sump and water pump. 2 litre cams will take it to 130 ish hp. Up to you if you bother with the
followers.
Im guessing youv got a type 9 already as youv got a pinto so its bolt straight to that with the zetec clutch and capri release brg. Youl need a
cvh starter which you can get cheap as chips.
Then the pricey bit of the exhaust manifold. Also to consider your bonnet may need modifying and pinto exhaust and inlet are on different sides..

This was a good thread with plenty of options, it heped me with my pinto to zetec change.

My exhaust and the inlet manifold with blade carbs were the high end of the cost at around £650, the finished cost was almost bang on 1K£ but i did
draw back a little over £400 in pinto parts i sold.
Also while the whole front of the car was bare because of front loom direction changes i fitted new polo rad, also had to re run one of the brake
lines because of new engine mount placement.
I must admit there was a lot more work than anticipated but it has deffinatlly been worth while even with the 1800 base cams, 2 litre cams will be
next on my list since they and the new lifters are sat on the bench.
