Books on Tunig/building race sohc pinto
Hi All
Well my car is nearly finished and i am already thinking of something else to do. i want to build from the ground up a fast road engine for my Indy.
I'm not looking for a high revving scream machine but a good reliable powerful unit.
Can anyone suggest any books on the subject. I really want a step by step type of manual as i have never done anything like this before.
I would like about 160 - 180 bhp at the wheels, how realistic is this?
Cheers
Andy

As you are ford already the zetec could be an obvious choice, you'd have to do a lot of work on a pinto to see 150bhp+ at the wheels.
IMHO it'd need to be a zetec or vauxhall 2ltr to see that sort of power without spending lots of money.
Other than the zetec or possibly an old v6 a vauxhall or a rover v8 would be the next logical step IMHO..
ps re: books, there are some books specific to building certain engines, there's a lot of good theory in the tuning weber and delorto carbs book
i've got which you're welcome to borrow...
Ned.
ps try some searches on amazon for pat braden or des hamil, i seem to remember they've got a lot of books out between them..

David Vizard was once the "book to have" on pintos, guess its a bit dated now, but as posted above, for the money involved an engine swap
would be the route i would take.....
years ago when pinto was the engine to have in the 2000cc grass track class the VX16v came along, dint matter how much was thrown at a pinto the all
but standard VX won the day, Zetecs arnt that expensive now are they ? cheaper than tuning the pinto IMO
All that said in a light locost a mild tuned pinto is gonna be lively in it ?

Cheers for that. Seeing as the cossy is the same 'size' as the pinto (at least the blocks are similar) i'm now thinking of one of
them seeing as they can give 200+bhp without too much hassle.......correct me if i'm wrong!
I think a good long talk with Hicost is due when he is back amongst the locosters!

P.S. Ben...nice one!!

spot on, to keep up with the VX boyz i went atmo cosworth as turbo's wernt allowed, straight swap, pinto turbo kits apear from time to time at
not a lot of dosh ??? there is also the "warrior" 16v head, they chuck power out too,
others may correct me but the pintos biggest power draw back,(i know its heavy too) is the head, i did at one stage run a "Dave Brookes"
downdraft head, that chucked out decent power but its at a price ££££'s the ports, inlets more so are too big so to do any "porting"
you have to start by adding material not taking it away............
again all that said pintos in the main have had there day in motorsport so there are good parts around that where at the time the "dogs
danglys" but now are worth much less as other engines are taking the glory..........

i too would definitely say turbo, cos they would usually be lighter than equivilent power NA engines.
there was a link about pintos and flow benches, indeed the head is apparently the limiting factor at first.
my choice of turbo, would be either cossy, rover or jap. cossy may well be the best, i certainly dont know, but the 2ltr turbos from, say, a 200sx are
CHEAP. £250 for the whole car if the turbo is knackered, which it may as well be so you can justify binning it for a big hybrid! equally, rovers are
very cheap, but probably not as much potential as the others. Having said that adjustable boost will give 240bhp with a cat bypass and a cone, and if
you go the cheap way, is only 50p for a fish tank flow regulator.
if you go rover, bear in mind that the vitesse sport is 20bhp more than the standard version, recognisable by 17inch rims and recaros. and the older
pistons are stronger, so conviniently are found in a 2-300 pound car!
anyway with turbos you will be looking at a minimum of 250 b per ton, so its not essential to throw loads of money at them.
Plus they fit better than V8!
anyway HTH, ofsky. got wank*rs cramp from typing too much!

Now that's funny
Bob i have that book on order actually. I would rather get my own copy dirty that someone elses. Thanks for the offer though.
Incidently are all cossy 2litre engines turbo? I really don't want to go turbo.
Ned: Good link, very interesting!!

I did read that people are getting over 200bhp reliably out of a pinto!!!
I'm also tempted by the Toyota Rage lump too,,,
Hmmm choices, choices.....

I don't want to wee on anyones chips but the book on pinto tuning is "How to power tune Ford SOHC pinto & Sierra Cosworth
DOHC engines" by Des Hammil.
It's in the Veloce"Speedpro" series like the Tiger Avon Book
ISBN 1 903706 10 6
I've got a block ready to accept Capri 2.8 pistons and Fiesta deisel rods.
He claims 310 hp N/A from a 2.2 engine!
Cheers

I sell a lot of 2.2 Pinto kits, so if you need your crank grinding to 80mm stroke Chris and those Capri pistons decking and circlipping then ring me
at work. Don't forget the rods will also need modifying.
