4a-ge alternator mounting options

Morning all.

I managed to wrestle the engine into my car over the weekend, and I have run into a slight problem. On the MR2 sourced 4a-ge engine, the alternator is mounted on a bracket on the intake side of the engine.

I have a problem, in that if the alternator is mounted there, it places the drivebelt pulley and drivebelt, slap bang in the middle of a chassis rail. The obvious solution is to cut a chunk from the cahssis rail, but that seems a bit agricultural for my liking.

So, I was wondering if any of you guys out there, know if toyota ever fitted the alternator to the exhuast side of the engine block of the 4a-ge engine, in any of their cars (for example the corolla gti perhaps?).

If I can find a standard part, it would make things a lot easier, as the only alternative I currently have, is to design and make a new bracket.

Thanks in advance
Andy

I did wonder about a smaller alternator, but it would still end up slap bang in the middle of the chassis rail.

I have been doing a bit of research on the net, and apparently there were two different mount styles used on the intake side of the engine, and I have the one where the alternator is mounted higher up on the engine block. It seems there were some alternators mounted further down on the block, although I am not sure exactly which ones!

maybe going down the custom bracket route is going to be easiest in the long run....

Cheers
Andy

The supercharged AW11's (MR2) had it mounted on the exhaust side. The big downside to this set up is finding one of the brackets. Also, the FWD 4AC engined Corolla's here in North America had the alternator mounted on the exhaust side of the block, but the mount would need some relieving to make it clear the head. I think i've still got one of the 4AC brackets, if you really want it.

Cheers,
Rod

Hi Andy I have a 4age in my locost and the alternator is on the intake side mounted lower down on a home made bracket and I have just brought another engine with alternator which is on the exhaust side on a home made bracket so I think the answer to your problem is make your own bracket.
If I can be of any further help I will do my best.

Yeah. I'm thinking a home made bracket is definately the way to go. The otehr thing I am going to do, is have a look for alternative, er, alternators, that are a bit smaller. I'm going to be running a very light electrical load, certainly far less than the standard MR2, so I think I can get away with a smaller alternator with no issues.

The only thing I need to make sure of, is that it can accept a suitable pulley to match the crank pulley and water pump pulley. Then it will be just a case of fabricating a bracket.

Trev, I don't suppose you have any photos of the bracket(s) you have do you?

Cheers
Andy
