clutch - AGAIN - SORRY...

ok guys - i know its been killed to death..

the zetec to type 9 clutch... again...

got a question

parts i have
escort 1.8 flywheel
escort 1.8 pressure plate
sierra friction plate
sierra release bearing

all fits well but...

when i put the cover plate over the friction plate WITHOUT the bolts in the cover it still needs to be pushed onto the flywheel another 5mm but is all the way home.. it can be tightened down yes BUT the spring fingers then start to move which leads me to think the friction plate is too thick (9mm)

is this normal? dosnt seem right to me i'm guessing the clutch will be a pig to adjust if its already moved without the cable

maybe there is a different cover plate that dosnt sit so close to the flywheel

doing me skull in..

as i say tho - everything does fit fine apart from that

regards

i think thats how they are. When you tighten the basket down the friction plate is tightly held between the flywheel and basket. When you engage the clutch the friction plate will disengage.

My setup is as follows...

1.8 flywheel Standard UNMODIFED
1.8 Pressure plate.
1.8 Friction plate.
I bought a standard 1.8 Escort clutch kit of ebay and chucked the release bearing, replacing it with...
Capri release bearing.

The zetec setup is thinner than a pinto setup and thats why you need a capri release bearing. Its taller and makes the type 9 setup reach the thinner clutch.

Hope that helps.

i looked at the zetec friction plate and tried it on the input shaft on gearbox - the hole diameter is about 5mm too small to fit on the splines but all else was right size..

was the friction plate thinner than 9mm? maybe there is a plate with a different size hole - the type 9 is a later 5 speed one

what year is the capri release bearing off? or better part number???

I've used a sierra release bearing but I believe you end up with pretty short travel. The release bearing needs to match the box so I would have though any later five speed capri would be okay?

What you're describing here is completely normal - using the cover bolts to pinch up that 5mm of space is what provides the pressure onto the centre (driven) plate, which allows the cluth to work. Do the cover bolts up gradually so you don't distort it, if all is well you'll see the fingers move inwards as you do this. It's at this point you need to centralise the centre plate, so the gearbox input shaft can slide nicely through when you put it all together.......

Cool - with a capital 'C' !

seems it is fine bar the release bearing - will go find one later

there is a company near here called

gmscaprispares.co.uk

they do all the shows up n down the country if anyone needs owt - they are good..

thanks people..

another hurdle down.. just to source alternator and starter now - the pinto i dont fink will fit either - the throw is wrong

alternator - i am gonna try for the pinto to fit - think its tiger who do the correct pulley - if i can file out the key way.. way cheaper and easier

Your welcome to come and have a look at my car to see how its setup.

My gearbox is from a 93 Sierra and the zetec clutch fits it no problem.

Check this one:
