Megasquirt is basically an ECU (a computer if you like) - It's used to control Fuel and ignition on Fuel injected cars.......
try www.msefi.com
and
www.msextra.com
What spec car do you have.....And for what reason are people suggesting you use MS.
PJ.
What spec car do you have?......

Thanks
well im going to be running a bmw 1.6 fuel injected engine.
People have suggested it as a good starting point to tuning my engine because i want a bit more than its standard 102 bhp
they have said that its good to get some control over the engine first before upgrading.
(i have considered new injectors and maby some bike TBs)

As said, it does the same as any ECU, except that you build it yourself, and the software that runs inside it is open source, so anyone can see how it
works, modify it, etc.
The usual way to run it is to feed it with a signal from air and water temperatures, throttle position, manifold pressure (ie vaccum - what a dizzy
usually uses), and some kind of timing signal either from a coil, crank sensor, or from an EDIS.
It will process all this information use it to control your injectors, idle control valve, and either fire a coil or drive an EDIS controller to run
the coils.
You program into the unit the amount of fuel you want at set loads (a combination of manifold vacuum and rpm), and tell it how much ignition advance
you want. This way you can optimise the settings to obtain optimal power, or any other characteristic you want from the engine, in the same way that
a custom made 'chip' does.
On an engine like that, where it pretty much has to be run on injection, it will likely be far easier to run Megasquirt than trying to get the
standard ECU working.

Thanks alot chris, really helped
i gess i will get my car running first and moving, then jump into modifying it for a bit more power
From what you have said and the megasquirt it seems like a cheapish route to take and will help me control my engine
Thanks alot
