Xud engine info Help please.

Any of you chaps knowledgeable with Citroën Xantia xud 1.9 turbo diesel engines?

My dad was coming up to a round about and let of the throttle, tons of black smoke came out of the exhaust and the engine cut out.

The AA was called and after an hour or so he managed to get it to run for a few seconds but would not tick over.

His verdict was the cam timing had jumped.

Any one with any experience of this? I haven’t looked at it yet but it will come down to me to try and sort it

Any pointers would be a great help.

Worst thing is he has only had it a week.

Cheers

Could be the timing has jumped especially if the auxilliary belt is knackered.Easy enough to check , would help if you can get hold of a timing pin kit. Remove timing cover, rotate engine in normal direction until 2 small holes in the pump pulley line up with two threded holes behind and cam lines up with one threaded hole . Beneath the starter between two webs in the block is a hole that should line up with a hole in the flywheel, the crank setting tool should fit although you may have to rotate the engine back and forth to get it in. Lock the pump and cam using three 8mm bolts into the threded holes. If you can't get everything lined up the timing has jumped, if you are very lucky you may get away with fitting a new belt . Check the auxilliary belt for damage and also the tensioner assembly Ps DO NOT USE THE CRANK LOCKING TOOL TO LOCK CRANK WHEN REMOVING THE PULLEY BOLT , decent air wrench should undo it.

Well its possable. The XU engines are good engines, but if the prevous owner has overlooked a cambelt change anything is possable.

Cambelts can jump, had this happen to me (Xant 2.1) when the auxilary belt de-laminated and some of the bits found their way into the cam cover. The car would still run and drive when it had jumped (I assume) 1 tooth. No power lots of smoke. Then it jumped another tooth - sounded like nuts and bolts rattling in a tin and that was that. Pistons had hit the exhaust valves and smashed the cam followers on 3 of the 4 cylinders. Head off, replaced all the cam followers just in case. Although the valves look ok with no sign of bending I replaced them just incase they had sustained micro fractures that might cause them to fail in the future. That was 27000 miles ago - these engines are tough. Lots of good stuff on www.frenchcarforum.co.uk

It is possible. The XUD's can throw the belt if theyr well over the due time. The ones ive know have bent valves but you might be lucky if it has. Did it rattle or anything?

Follow rusty's procedre. Its quite simple to check. I have just had my 306 dt do a similar thing but it has completely wrecked number 2 big end with no warning.

Could be the turbo or pump throwing a wobbler?? Immobiliser? I have know these on peugeots to give a similar problem.

If u need bits i am stripping an xud. All bits except crank and number 2 conrod.
