Alloy 4x4 Bellhousing+ 5th Gear woes
After i've posted this i'm not going to ask any questions again for another year, i promise
Thought it would be a good idea to try and use the 4x4's type 9 alloy bellhousing but have noticed that there is a reccess section that is cast
into it to go over the plate on the 4x4 box where the countershaft appears out of the case of the gearbox
Heres the recess :

On the rwd bellhousing the back face is totally flat which obviously butts up again the countershaft pokeing out

Can i just bolt up the alloy bellhousing and have no problems or does there need to be something over that countershaft section like whewn the rwd box
is bolted up flat against it with a gasket???
Will it leak otherwise? - would sealing a pice of ally over it with gasket and sealer be ok?
Finally 5th gear.... not the tv program but my gearbox, you can select over to where 5th should be but did'nt get drive - with the box out if
you put it inot where 5th should be you do get a clunk put apon holding the output shaft while turning the input shaft you can stop it from
turning!
This problem arose after a quick gearchange, a quick crack type sound and no 5th gear!
Could someone enlighten me as to possible cause of this 5th gear loss, as i'm sure its only selector engagement based and not completely
buggered cog based!
I'm going to crack the rear section off to get to the 5th gear parts so if can find out the probable causes then i will know what to look
for.
Thanks once again for your time in reading this let alone replying
All feedback greatly appreciated
Cheers

My 306 lost 5th gear on the way home once and i had to travel 100 miles in 4th. Turned out to be selector fork and synchro hub.
Just my 2p's worth...
Ned.
beware, I've got yellow skin

Thanks Ned,
Just really the bellhousing issue now...
Anyone got any thoughts?
It would be the same on a 4 speed box too, i just need to know if i stick a plate over the end of where you can see the countershaft using gasket
sealer it will be ok.
I was thinking of trying to make a plate and use the bellhousing bolts to help keep it in place but because of the shape its not possible - bah!

Hi Mr G
This is probably a load of tosh but.......
my getrag box wouldn't select reverse.
The gear lever end locates in a "cup block" which has a shaft press fitted into it which in turn enters the gearbox. When going across the
gate (in neutral) the shaft turns. A heavy gear change had moved the shaft in the block, so I could go across to 5th but not the other way to engage
reverse.
Cure was to reposition block on shaft, drill & fit selock pin.
This may not be any help, but it could save stripping the box.

What car is that bellhousing from? I've bolted a Capri box to an XR4x4 bellhousing and it seems to work ok although it's not moved under
it's own power yet! I'm pretty sure my doesn't have the recess however.

bellhousing is from a xr4x4. The xr4i is rwd and its bellhousing is the same as any other - flat backed.
I can remember wondering where the gearbox oil was coming from when i bolted a normal bellhousing to this box before and noticed it coming out from
between the faces, I didnt use a gasket or sealer so this area WILL leak i take it if its not enclosed and sealed.
If you have used a xr4x4 bellhousing like in pictures 1 & 2 then the end of the shaft in picture 3 is not covered at all and i'm sure
you'll have leakage!
Thanks for the input Paul & Chris!

Thats bad news Chris
Still it's better to realise the situation now I suppose than have the gearbox run dry or cause problems through leakage later on if thats
any consolation!
I'm stripping the back tail section off the gearbox this week so i'll post my finding just for reference if anyone else has the same 5th
gear problem at anytime.
Cheers again,
G
