Should I change diff ?

At present I have a 3.97 open diff ( 7 ½ inch off a Granada ) on the Viento. I find 1st , 2nd and 3rd gears run out far too soon. 4th and 5th gears are fine with lots acceleration. Once moving there is little point in 1st or 2nd gear.

I have a 3.62 LSD diff ( 7 inch ) sat in the garage and was wondering if it was worth the effort of changing the diffs over.

Am I right in thinking the 3.62 would give me a longer speed range in 2nd and 3rd gear. Not bothered that much about improving top end speed but would like to get more out of 3rd gear before changing up.

Paul.

Ps – what oil should I use in the lsd when I clean it up today.

I had the same problem in the beginning with the Falcon, it would scream its nuts off doing 70 which was a right pain for long drives. I changed the gearbox to fix it but would have loved a simple diff conversion. Made a huge difference on the mpg also.

LSD as well, what are you waiting for?

The change will give you an almost 10% higher top speed in each gear. So, if your top speeds in 1st, 2nd and 3rd are 30, 50 and 70 MPH, they will become 33, 55 and 77 MPH with the new diff. If that's enough of an improvement then swap.

Do you have to swap the drive shafts too or are they the same length?

edit: the LSD part of a sierra diff is sealed. Just use normal diff oil.

You could also try raising the profile of the tyres on the rear. My mind casts back to the hilarious boy racers in Crete who had tiny little wheels almost mini size on their cars to make them accelerate faster, must have been fun on long trips

Ok ..got the car out of the garage to start and ..

Whent for a drive instead

Will change the diff once I cleaned up the 3.62 and changed the oil. The drive shafts are the same lenght so dont need to change them . Just unbolt and lower the old one out and raise the new one in ..

Def need a little more top end speed in 3rd gear.

Paul
