can you see on the belt pattern and the pattern on the pulley on the water pump? so if the pump pulley is flat it will take the back of the belt like
the first one, but if it has a v or somehting simalar in it it will be the inside of the belt

Both. But providing the pump came from a 1.8 escort and not 1.8 mondeo the second one is right.

if its a vee belt then right diagram,if a toothed belt I assume its toothed both sides then left is possible.

Because your not using a more simple set up than on the car you use the one to the right. This requires that you replace the mondeo water pump with an
escort one and change the flat pulley to a v grooved one. My original answer both wasn't strictly correct as although with the original pump
you'd need to run it the otherway it probably woudl'nt tension properley without the original set up.

what if it's multi-v as it is on a zetec? then either's possible but it depends on the pulley and the pump

its a 6 groove belt - the pump is from a escort - just need to know which way round the pump should turn on the escort i suppose then - if its over
the top (IE in the triangle figure on the right) i will need a new 6 groove v belt pulley as the one i have is smooth backed.. engine is from an
escort not the mondeo

You couldn't run it like the one on the left, nowhere near enough belt contact with pulley.

Irrespective of the correct pump rotation the belt should be as per RHS to give decent friction angle (or whatever you call it). Then you need correct
pump to rotate that way round.
Can you remember what the configuration was in the donor car? (assuming you havent changed anything).
