Correct ignition advance?

Is there any simple (DIY) way to determine that you have about right ignition setting after modifying your engine?

My X-flow 1600 is a GT-spec, appart from pistons from 1300GT, giving some extra compression. I have rertarded the electronic dizzy a few degres from this reason, but I´m not sure about the setting.

Running on high load/rpm, its impossible to "hear/notice" if there are any "knocks" from over advance.

How have you lot done about this?

Not really, you just need to hear the pinking if any.
It really does depend on what type of fuel you use and how you load the engine, but I run my x-flow with a 244 cam, 11:1 comp at about 15 advance at 1000RPM up to max 35 advance at 3500RPM

old skool tuning is to advance until it pinks under heavy load then back off 2 degrees.
I would put it back to 10 BTDC and see how that goes, then retard if required..

Pinking is most likely at High Load at Low RPM

Test by using full throttle on hill in high gear from 1500 to 2500 rpm

Retard until audible pinking stops.

To be honest the days of using high compression ratios as quick & easy way to get more power are over.

I had the same set up , 1600gt with 1300 pistons and an electronic dizzy from a fiesta but found it needed to be set with static advance a few degrees under the correct 10deg to prevent pinking. You could modify the dizzy to reduce the maximum advance by welding the end of the advance arm to reduce its travel or do what i did and fit mappable ignition.

Thank you for your answers!

Since I normally dont hear any pinking, may it´s nothing to worry to much about.
