Horsepower knowledge needed!

'Evenin All!

What sort of horsepower could you expect to see from a 1700(ish)cc Tuned Xflow engine?

135 bhp is often quoted for a 1700 crossflow conversion

depends on the state of tune.

kent 235 cam, 1700 pistons from a 1300 (to raise compression) and ported head makes around 135bhp.

Look on the vulcan web site, it gives you examples of what they do and what power they expect.

Hi anything up to 160 without to much bother. All the cross flows that where in the KITS championship in the old class B with a downdraft on where 160ish. And still hold a few of the lap records

But getting 200hp will cost a round 10-12k.

SO on subject of HP what do you get form a :

1.8 Zetec

&

1.8 Zetec with Bike Carbs

Hi a STD 1.8 zetec with the 130ps / 2.0l cams on STD timing will give 155hp ish. When running with a set of twin 40s. Switching it over to bike carbs will give a simalar reading. But to get the best out off it throttle bodies would be better. and release another 2-5 on the top end but would enable the whole mid range to be dialed in spot on which helps smooth the torque curve out and gives much better power delivery as well as increased torque.

Then if you start messing with the cam timing you can see an extra 10-15. Of course it will need a proper ECU to get the best out of it if using throttle bodies.

A lot of silly claims are made for xflo engines, the old A Class Clubmans Formula racers made an honest 170 to 180 bhp that is really the maximum possible even spending an awful lot of money

Without spending really major money you can only expect between 90 and 135 from a 1700 depending on cam and carbs

Kind of looks prehistoric compared to a Zetec or K16

Getting 160bhp out of a crossflow is quite straightforward if you've got a Kit Car racing engine budget and the right contacts

Mind you it depends on what rolling road you test it on as well........ I've seen a balanced and blueprinted 1300 crossflow with 32 DGV weber and a 750MC Locost control cam produce 107bhp on a well known Mini Miglia racers rolling road so 160bhp on a decent 1600 shouldn't be that difficult...........

(The 1300 produced a more realistic 88bhp a week later on a rolling road I actually believed btw )

Hi yep nothing too special too get 160.

Just good block crank rods the right cam + pistons and a set of ARP big end bolts. Then just a bit of lightening and balancing again done properly.

As D Beddows has said the bog STD 1300 GT produces 85-90.

And all the figures i am quoting are using one off the best and accurate rolling roads in the UK. Operated by a professional.

I'm expecting around 150bhp at the wheels from a +0.090 overbore(1700ish) xflow with piper 285 steel cam, hi-comp pistons, DCOE 40s and a good head.

I fitted this rebuilt crossflow a week ago and just finished running it in. It will be tuned by Mick at Hi Tech Motorsport. Lodge Farm Industrial estate in Cradley Heath starting at 2 oclock this afternoon if you're interested.

Hi sorry i did forget to mention a good head would be required. But with the cross flow going out of fashion these days and every one swapping them for zetecs and bike engines there are many for sale that have cost 3-4 k to build up for sale at £500-£1500.

But a man in a shed can rebuild a crossflow and with it all being so simple. And now that SKY FORD have brought the rights to the crossflow engine it is now easier to get parts for than it is for a silver or blacktop zetec.

Sorry guys, I'm no expert on engines but some of these power figures are REALLY pie in the sky for a crossflow!!!
I've seen some proper engines in my time (and built a few) and 150 at the wheels is gonna need more than a 285 cam and a +90 overbore!!
Back in its heyday, the 1700 crossflow with a 244 cam, stage 3 head (bigger valves etc), strengthened bottom end and a pair of 40s was putting out 135bhp at the flywheel - see Caterham super sprint. I'd love to see the exact spec for a cheap 170 bhp crossflow!! It just ain't going to happen!
I've nothing against crossflows, they're my engine of choice, but realistically 130bhp is the closest you're going to get cheaply. Mines producing 118 at the flywheel (John Noble RR) on a DD carb. They were surprised I was getting that much from this carb!!

Mine made 127 BHP at the flywheel on Emeralds rolling road. engine bored 30thou oversize with Kent BCF2 cam , Vulcan 11a head, Kawasaki zzr1100 TBs on home made maifold and an Emerald ECU . Most of the parts I got off Ebay cheap and rebuilt the engine myself so it didn't cost a fortune . OK a Zetec would have made more power but the car had the xflow in it so used it

Yes, Marcus was right, max 131bhp at 6300rpm...

Spec was pretty high though, with a full race oselli head on top. At the same rolling road the same head made miles better torque and power on my old engine, which has either a 234 or 244 kent cam.

That Piper 285 cam is going to have to go.

Meanwhile the old engine goes back in.
