how do radiators work?!
not the silly question you'd expect, but its drawn you to this thread
what i mean is though, there seems to be a lot of people using vw polo radiators, which i assume come from 1.2 engines or the like, but using them
with 2 ltr engines, and sometimes bigger engines i think (i may be wrong)
but say for example a BMW (the widest range of engines on a production car i could think of) is the radiator on a 1.6 engine likely to be the same as
3.0?
my mates got some vauxhall radiators from various cars he's stripped, he's got one from a 1 litre corsa, 1.2 corsa, and possibly got one
from a 2 litre red top corsa, if the 1 litre one is the best condition, would i be wasting my time with it? or is it the same as fitted to the 2 litre
engine? he's said i can have any parts i need from them, but i don't want to take all of them just for taking them

basically most cars have are much larger than they normaly need so that they can be sold all over the world. you can get away with a small one so long
as your not towing a caravan or thrashing it across the desert. I ran one of my bluebirds with no cooling fan fitted for 3 years and towed a trailer,
not once did the gauge go over halfway.

The Polo rad is all ally and therfore (so i have been told) 45% more efficient than a steel one of the same size

oooh noooo, no caravans or me! lol hmm, interesting, so i should be ok with the one from a 1 litre corsa? thats if its the best condition obviously.
he says he might have one from a 2.0, but i have a feeling thats from the one that got crashed...

The name Radiator is a bit misleading they actually mainly transfer heat by conduction from the coolant to the air.
Radiator efficiency depends on surface area exposed to airflow efficient rads like the Polo or the old copper-brass rad in the BL Mini have a lot
of fine closely spaced fins and a lot of thin closely spaced water tubes.
Old Ford Cortina & early Escort rads aren't very efficient because the have much coarser spacing of the radiator cores and bigger water
passages.
However in the old days radiators were expensive to make and if they had fine water passages would clog up if as typical of the day filled with hard
tap water.
VW were the first to use alloy rads thy were so efficient that Golf 1600 rads were used in Formula Atlantic, F3 F2 and even F1 cars.

I have to agree - it cools my V6 down even when thrashed.
Cheers,
