Smoke
After lying around for a year, my Pinto started and runs ok. But I notice that the exhaust is clean on start up but gets smoky after about a
minute's running.
I'm thinking maybe valve stem seals ?

If you leave it idling does the smoke get worse and belch a load out when the revs are raised? if so could be valve stem seals . Easy to change on a
Pinto without removing head

It doesn't seem to get much worse as revs are raised.
How do you compress the valve springs without taking the head off ? I assume the new seals would be tight enough to hold the valves in place while
fitting the collets ?

If you set the cylinder you are working on to TDC on the compression stroke and remove the rocker . If you have access to comressed air you can
pressurise the cylinder to keep the valve on its seat (put into top gear and apply handbrake) you can then lever down the valve spring and remove
colletts, change seal and reassemble. Do one cylinder at a time , should take only an hour or so .. No need to remove cam etc

TY Rusty.
No compressed air or even electricity
However smoke seems to have died down - maybe just the oil I put in the bores burning off. Fingers crossed and if have to I'll do head-off
refurb.
