air box on my indy

hi im building a mk indy spec r with a gsxr 1000 k4 bike engine im not wanting to cut a whole in the bonnet(with bulge) to fit a air filter so want to make a alloy air box to also cut noise down . i know what size and shape of air box i want and my brothering law is a alloy welder and he is going make it for me so there is know problem there .
The problem is the bell mouth on the ram pipes to the throtle bodys nearl touch the underside of bonnet ive read on hear u need around 1.5 x the width of your throttle flap from top of ram pipe to back of air box. if i were to shorten my ram pipes how much of a difference would it make to the engine or could u put a angle on them like a 45 deg bend then the ram pipe . also would this alter the fueling and tune of the engine. etc
can eany one help me and has eany one had this problem befor????

If you shorten the length of the ram pipe you might effect the running of the engine if the ram pipes have a tuned length.
However, if you leave them as is without the recommended 1-1.5 X throttle body diameter between the top of the ram pipe and the top of the airbox you'll suffer even worse. A 45 degree bend would be a good option if it allows you to keep the rampipe lengths the same...
I wouldn't worry too much about fuelling as you'll probably need to tune it anyway if you're using a non-standard airbox and filter...

i rang malc at yorkshire engines he said ill loose power at bottom end but gain it at top end if i shorten pipes just wondered how much power id loose?

Depends how much you shorten them by. I wouldn't worry too much- on my ST1100 I chooped down the humungously long ram pipes (which supposidly create some of the ST's low down torque) and yet still it's got loads of load down power....

think im going to shorten them i think, once the car is out it wont be spending much time in the low rpm range eany way lol
malc said the k5 gsxr has two long pipes in middle and outer two are really short ??? so may see if i can find 2 sets of outer k5 pipes ?
