plug leads

Seems my plug leads could be interfeering with my Lumenition module , how much do I need to spend on decent plug leads ? £10 in Halfords or £50 on Magnecor ? please bear in mind the carbs only cost £50 and the engine rather less....but I do want it to do justice to the Lumenitions potential .

Cheers
Ian

I am curious as to how you work that out.

Is it the standard lumentition module - optical trigger inside the distributor and module mounted on aluminium heart sink?

Is it bolted to chassis well so has a good earth?

Are you using radio suppressed leads i.e. the carbon ones as opposed to copper wire leads?

What engine is it?
Are you using standard coil or one designed for ballast? (it should be former) search on here for how to tell them apart.

If you feel it is the leads, then new radio suppressed ones from halfords should work fine.

Hi

I've been in contact with Lumenition and described the problems I'm having and they have sent a list of tests to try out . High on the list is the plug leads need to be fully supressed and non Copper otherwise they cause severe problems for my "Lumenition Performance System" (as oposed to the standard "Optronic" system) .

My engine is a Fiat Twin cam 1.6 and all I know about the leads is they are RED and came with the Engine . so it just eliminates this potential problem before I move on to testing the optical switch / coil / and Power module to track down why I'm having intermittent misfires and cut outs .

cheers
Ian

Oh and the coil is the matched Lumenition one from the performance system so unless it is faulty should be ideal

's what I said Obviously the so high performance system is not that great if it won't work with any lead. No doubt they were offering to sell you a set of mega leads for £ 100!!!

red leads are notoriously bad for electricity, you want blue or black ones.

pull of the lead at the distributor cap and look at the connector. You should either see a copper wire or black glass fibre strands in the centre. If copper, check 'em in the bin. Unlkess the engine is from the 60s or 70s, it is unlikely to have copper leads as original equipment.

I see no reason why suppressed leads from halfords circa £ 10 swon't work.

If you are local, I have a set of leads you could borrow, assuming they are long enough to see how they go.

Also make sure that where the leads cross, they do so at right angles.,

where they run parallel to each other, ensure there is space between them - those lead separator thingies are good for t hat, or use cabble tie and plastic tuve to keep them apart.

Are your plugs in good order?

Is the cap in good order too?

If the optical sensor is fitted and wired correctly, I doubt that is at fault.

Aparently the CEM (constant energy module) works differently from the standard Optronic and is extremely sensitive to EMI

Hmmm just as I thought

Not local but thanks for the offer even though it looks increasingly likely they want upgrading anyway.

just bundled together as they were in the Fiat

Yes new !

Is the cap in good order too?

Will check if I get no joy from the new leads.

has been working but also the car has been breaking down a lot too

Cheers

Don't Lumenition also make plug leads?

Might as well go for the complete set, if they do!

Yes but not a specific set tailored to my particular engine .

update

Just to update fitted new leads and still no joy , went through the Lumenition check list and drew no conclusions . so ripped out the system and sent it for testing ...the main control unit was cooked .....fitted new kit ...Car runs better than ever , certainly well enough to run it in before getting the fuel system properly set up ...
