Metal radiator tubing

There was a thread recently about making tubes for coolant systems, and how to put the lip on the end. Unfortunately i cant find that thread, so i have a few questions!

Is copper tube the right stuff? Just need to link a 32mm rubber tube to a 34mm tube, and add about 40cm of length. Would a plumbing shop sell the right tube, or would an online shop sell the stuff ready flanged?!

i would just go to demon tweeks and get lashed but their wwwebsite is cr4p, and i cant find the right thing.

Any ideas anyone?! thanks in advance!

Something i'm interested in too, advice appreciated. Surely somewhere must sell stuff for custom car plumbing.
Rally design stock some nice samco hoses but no unions or extenders to go with...

What Im going to do, all be it for a BEC is to use 28mm copper pipe and at the connections to the rubber hose solder on 1/2 a yorkshire fitting to give a good fit and the required budge. If anyody has better ideas please post before I buy the bits.

Thanks Gordon

I'm sure I've got one, just don't know where I've put it

that would be the one, thanks james! as i got out of the car just now i remembered it was mr graber who posted it...

now where can i get some 32mm copper pipe...

BTW, did it ever get decided if it was ok to squeeze rubber tubes a few mm either way if they were the wrong diameter? someone asked recently IIRC but no conclusive answer emerged...

number of ways you could do this.

firstly, 2mm difference is bum all - i recon you could use a 32 or 34mm metal tube and clamp rubber hoses to that - one would need to stretch or compress. I have clamped 35mm pipe to my 32mm rad no probs.

If you want to use metal pipe, then straight steel exhaust tube is OK. Sections of Jag V12 cooling systems are mild steel and they take over 10 years to even think about rusting.

You could make a metal adapter. Get a bit of 34mm tube, cut into two lenghts. cut a slot in one and take 2mm from its dia (cut will prob do that!, slip inside other one and weld inside other one's circumfrence and along the cut seam of modded tube .

europa sell 'exhaust adapters' like this that would do.

you can buy straight lengths of rubber pipe from europa with different end dias.

You can buy 400mm flexy pipes with different ends. Europa do lots, halfords do a few. I did all my plumbing with 2 400mm flexys and a single 100mm length from rad to steel tube, that ran under car to the endgine where it went flexy on bottom hose.

you can buy steel tubing from most good larger motor factors that sell exhausts.

I put a lip on the end by running a weld along the circumference, then dressing it down a bit with a grinder.

If you dont have a lip even the tightest clip cant stop the hose blowing off. been there in tests in the garage.

I found the best place to get metal coolant pipe was at the plumbers merchant, find a good one and they will have loads of different fittings, I just said " I want to join this to this" and most would be helpful. I found that you can upsize standard copper tube by soldering on a end fitting to increase the diameter, also use the same method to give a lip to the tube end. If you are unable to get a fitting to act as a tube end you can cut grooves int the tube wall which grip the pipe fine when the clamp is fitted, none of mine have blown off yet. Also you can get plated copper which looks good and is not a lot more than standard.

thanks guys. I think i remember seeing a plumbers merchant recently so i'll go there. It needs to be metal tubes rather than rubber cos im using 4 rubber bits, 2 on the rad and 2 on the engine, and just need a length of metal (or 2) to link them together.

Again, muchos grassyass...
