R1 engine question

Hey,

Being in the garage today getting my R1 5PW sorted to get it in the car and came accross somthing which i thought was odd

using the gear selector I could only click it one notch forwards and 1 back I thought i would be able to click it 7 times in each direction is this correct?

I then took out all the friction plates and i was able to all the gears does this sound normal?

Cheers

If you turn the output back and forth the other gears would have selected, its just a matter of getting the cogs to mesh whilst the engine isn't turning. Normally the rotation of the engine and box allows the gears to mesh, by dismantling the clutch you allowed the input shaft to move enough to let the cogs mesh.

You will go from neutral one direction into 1st gear (where it will stay), then it will need to pass through neutral in the other direction to get to 2nd, but it will spring back from 2nd (not going into neutral but looks like it) and you will then keep moving it in the same direction as 2nd to get 3rd etc (each time it springs back.
