ticky pinto

our pinto currently has quite a loud 'ticking' noise and we cant quite work out what it is. we set the valve clearances as per haynes but we've still got this noise which appears to be coming from the dizzy. If you put upward pressure on the dizzy (kinda pull it up away from the block) the noise amplifies. However we've had the dizzy off and inspected it but been unable to find anything.

Anyone any idea? im fairly sure its the dizzy, but as i say i cant see anything wrong with it (its a transit item i think).

The oil pump is driven off the distributor drive shaft isnt it?? Have you checked this also for wear??

At a guess from your previous posts you have twin 40 dellortos fitted.

If this is the case then if you have taken a vacuum take off from one branch of the manifold then what you are hearing is the vacuum advance being rapidly moved as it sees the vacuum pulses from the one cylinder you have it connected to.

A vacuum advance dizzy is not suitable for use in this way.

To confirm the diagnosis disconnect the vacuum advance pipe and the noise should go away.

You can get vacuumless dizzys from places like Aldon or H&H

or fit MegaJolt.

Cheers

interesting, never thought of that ^^

There is a long hexagonal rod rather like an Allen key running from the distributor to the oil pump below. This may be a bit worn. Personally I'd turn the engine to no1 on the cap, mark the position of the base of the distributor on both it and the engine then take it off. It’s easy to dismantle and check for wear. If nothings found, pull out the oil pump drive shaft and check it isn't worn as if it strips the corners off the hex bar it will no longer turn the oil pump...

When I had a dizzy and twin 40s I had exactly the same thing with the vacuum connected. I just disconnected the vacuum advance and it ran perfectly (only loss was probably economy at low load).

If you took vacuum from all four inlet tracts, teed them together and ran through a fuel filter as a damper before connecting to the dizzy you may solve the problem, but it's probably not worth the effort.

Just one thing when i striped my engine there was a circlip on the oil pump drive to stop it coming out when removing the dizzy.
if you have a circlip fitted i don't know if it can fall onto the sump if you pull the drive out
