Vauxhall XE clearances

I need the bore tolerances and little end tolerances for a 16v XE lump.

Does any one have a Haynes manual that covers the early Astra GTE 16v engine which would have these dimensions in it?

I have done some research and have come up with a clearance of 0.03mm greater diameter for the bore over the piston diameter. But would like someone to confirm this.

The pistons i am using are forged ones from the early GTE.

Ned, can you help?

Any help help would be really appreciated as the block and rods are off to Scholar at the end of the week for machining!!

Ta,

Doug.

David,

Thanks, that is brilliant. My pistons have 99 on the crown so i will bore to 85.99 mm.

Don't suppose you have a copy of the page with the little end sizes on as i also have to alter my rods?

Thanks again,

Doug.

Std bore is 86mm and thats exactly what you bore to.

Running clearance will vary according to use - .03mm OK for road, .07mm for race.

XE gudgeon pin is 21mm dead. If new little ends are being fitted (unusual as they really do last well) - then the machine shop will hone until they achieve the correct sliding fit. This is they will do by feel, not by gauging.

If Scolar are doing your machining then why do you ask - please don't insult them by telling them how to do their job!

By the way if you are looking to achieve .03mm running clearance on an old XE block, I promise you you'll need liners fitting, and its cheaper to rebore and fit 0.5mm pistons.

Ok, that makes sense.

"Running clearance will vary according to use - .03mm OK for road, .07mm for race".

It going to be a forced induction engine so i gues i'll go for the tighter tolerance to prevent blow by?

I am having to modify my zetec rods to take XE pistons/gudgeon pins. This involves increasing the diameter of the little end by 0.4mm.

I don't want to insult them, just be armed with all the information i need so i don't look a prat if they ask me what bore clearance i want. I would of thought finding out the manufacturers recommended tolerances for the parts you are going to put in an engine is just common sense!

It probably is but i'm increasing the bore of my 85mm zetec engine to fit XE pistons not fitting new pistons to an XE!

Sorry if i forgot to mention it.

The XE pistons are a common trick used (because of their lower deck height) to lower the CR of 2ltr zetec lumps!

Just so happens the early GTE ones were forged which makes them even more suitable.

Lugged the haynes into work, though it seems you don't need the info now, DOH!

Sorry ned, thanks for the effort. Did you ever get rid of your used set of pistons in the end?
