filter height on 38DGAS

I've just got me a 38DGAS at last (£10... my how I laughed all the way home).
Under bonnet clearance is still going to be a problem, so my question is this:
Does anyone know what is the minimum vertical gap which must be allowed above the tops of the square shaped choke venturis? In other words, how low can I place the top cover of the pancake/K&N filter above the carb air inlet without strangling air flow. Motor in question is RV8 in fairly standard tune, so about 160bhp I guess.
Any help appreciated.

Cheers,

Terry
