oil pressure

when turning over the engine i have got oil coming out the hole where the adaptor for the pressure gauge fits in, so i assume i have got some oil pressure.
However my new TIM gauge does not give a reading.

any ideas?

i think the copper pipe that came with it could be blocked, will have to give burton a call see what they think.

dave, i think i do have oil pressure its just not giving me a reading

just checked it and there is definitely oil coming out of the adapter hole, and no oil is coming out of the far end when attached to the adapter hole

yeah suppose your right, will check the tube again, and give burton a call if i cant get it sorted till monday, definitely don't want to ruin the engine.

Capilary tube !!

What type of gauge is it ?
If mechanical, it will have a pipe that must be able to pass the oil through, quote above suggests there is no oil at gauge end of pipe, theres your problem, pipe is blocked.


Just to add confusion, look at my post on oil pressure. If the engine has been completely rebuilt, make sure the plug is in the end of the oil gallery behind the timing case. If this is missing, you will get plenty flow from pressure gauge outlet point but zero pressure.

I know, it has cost me a fortune since this happend to me

the engine was not rebuilt and appearantly was running before.

the pipe was blocked where the ends were soldered on, i fixed it and can now blow through it.
However still no oil coming through, so i am gonna try and increase the pressure now.
How can I inrease the cranking speed?

If you can blow through pipe and when cranking there is still no oil, the pipe is blocked !!!!
Thats going on your info before that yopu hacve oil flow from gallery hole when cranking without pipe connected !

Remove plugs as mentioned above, have a good battery, crank with no connections what so ever to gallery hole, there should be oil pissing out.
Connect pipe, repeat above, oil should wee out.
Connect gauge, repeat above, there should be some indication of pressure on gauge.
If not, start engine, after about 2 to 5 seconds, there should be pressure.
If there is, it should be about 65psi with engine cold and at around 1500rpm.
If no pressure recorded when running at all.
Stop engine and start looking for major wear on main bearings, plug missing as I suggested above, etc as if this is the case (i.e. no oil pressure but flow from oil gallery hole) your engine is US

Can you show picture of the pipe and guage you are using ?

I had problem with no oil pressure with a TIM gauge, but also very little oil coming out of the said adaptor. I was found that the gasket on the oil pump was u/.s letting oil straight back to the sump. new gasket & pressure restored

ok cheers guys problem sorted.

the only thing i did was turn the pipe around to the way that i was able to blow through it.

took the spark plugs out and got a reading of almost 50 psi when cranking

is this about right?

Good news.
Yes, that is perfect, you will find that when you run the engine, you will get about 60 + at above tick over revs.
Once engine is hot, you should see around 60 psi at say 2000 rpm, but dont worry if the pressure goes down to around 30 psi at idle when hot.
As I said above, the pump provides flow, the resistance in the oil galleries and bearing clearances etc create pressure. If you check the Ford handbook, or any other engine for that matter, you will find that the minimum pressure is very low indeed. If you think about it, at idle, even 10 psi squirting from a hole in say the rocker shaft ensures that you have a flow of oil through the bearing surface which is all you need.
