oh and if it turns out that you have to remove the head to replace valves on no account turn the engine over with the head off

214i can be 8 valve or 16 valve depending on the year, I on't know about the K8 on the 16 valve engine you are looking at least 6 valves and
possibly valve guides.
Easier to swap the heads, the heads are all basically the same ie any 16 valve head can fit any 16 valve engine although changes were made when the
engines went over to coil packs in 1999.
Cam belt change interval is 48,000 mile pre 1999, and from year 2000 60,000 miles

Apart from the VVC engines! The early 1.4 engines had a different casting as well, smaller ports that didn't flow as well.
I have never seen a 16v K series survive a snapped belt personally; usually most of the exhaust valves get bent (along with cracked guides) and having
the valve heads snap off isn't that unusual.

Brother's car, the belt stripped the teeth around the crank pulley.
Stopped the car with the engine still running 100% fine.
When he went to restart later, that's when it stripped the teeth.
Crank turning, everything else stationary.
Bent valves.
We just fitted a spare head I happened to have, freshly skimmed and ready to go.

The belt snapped on mine as I pulled away from the lights, thought I would get away with it at that low speed... BUT.. 12 valves bent, two far enough
to break the guides....

I have a 1400 K series sitting in my garage that I want to give away for free. Unfortunately, I don't know anything about it regarding year,
exact model, condition. Also, I'm 12,000 miles away from home for a few months and I don't think mum would be very helpful.
Where are you? The engine is in Reading, so if you want to take a nosy at it, I'll email mum.

Read a rover workshop manual before lifting the head.
(1) Lift the head check for piston damage
(2) Locate a replacement head complete with all the valve gear and cams still in place ----- if the engine has a dizzie get one complete with
dizzie if it has coil packs get one for coil packs . but the head can be off, anything from a 1.4 to a 1.8 turbo.
(3) New head gasket and inlet manifold gasket
(4) Job done

I should add if you have swap the bottom end then the flywheel has to be changed over so the flywheel reluctor ring matches the car's ecu.

I have no idea. If you want to risk disappointment by driving an hour, I'll get on to mum about it. I got it for free in 2007 from someone who
bought it as an alleged runner for his Mini, but he never got around to the swap and never saw it running. I got it thinking I could take it apart to
learn about engines but that never happened and it's sat in the garage ever since. I've got a gear box, a 214 wiring loom, ECU, coil pack,
and possibly an Mpi as well as Spi inlet manifold, and I think I still have the clocks somewhere in the garage. I think it had done about
60,000 miles but I'm not sure. Also, I think it still has oil in it.
I don't know how old it is, what car it's from, what condition it's in, and I think the engine number was on a paper sticker which
has gone.
I don't want to get your hopes up, but if you want to risk it, it's yours.
I do have these old photos but they don't show a lot...

Thats a 1990s K series, to use the head on a post 1999 engine involves changing over the cam belt tensioner and and cams.
To use the later tensioner involves drilling and tapping an M6 hole
Cams need to be changed because the later engine has a cam position sensor.
Coolant temperature sensors also changed --- change to match the car ECU.
