carbs??

hi,
can anyone tell me the advantages of fitting twin performance carbs over a single carb - i know it gives better performance, but cant see how.
also, what bearing does the size ( 40, 45 etc...) have on the performance.
obviously they are better than standard carbs, but i just like to have an understandng of things.

cheers
tom

It's as simple as this.
More HP is acheived by getting as much air (and fuel) into and out of the cylinders as quickly as possible.
Twin or quad barrel carbs allow more air in.You need to have a good flow from the engine also, hence 4 branch manifolds etc.
The 40 / 45/ 48 etc reffered to is the size of the inlet chokes on the carbs.
