Gearbox Help
Evenin!
I've mentioned previously that I can't find an off-the-shelf bellhousing to mount the Rover KV6 longitudinally for RWD.
Then I saw a Getrag 283 gearbox (MG ZT - KV6 box) on eBay for £15 and wondered if I could split it in half and use the (slightly machined!)
bellhousing face with a backplate that suits whatever gearbox I eventually want to use.
I've removed all the bolts and managed to prise the gearbox slightly open, but the bugger won't split completely.
What am I forgetting about!? Is it the diff bearings that are holding it together? Does it matter if a gear is engaged?
And lastly... what about the general idea of using the front casing as the basis for a RWD bellhousing?
Cheers

I used a Getrag front casing on my Conversion. So it can be done.

You will have to strip the whole gearbox I reckon, mine came as just the casings so I did not need to, I am sure its not difficult.
Go for it. .

If it's like the PG1 gearbox there is a plug (2" diameter roughly, uses a sump plug alan type tool) on the end of the gearbox. Remove this
and there is a large circlip that needs releasing to split the box.

I suspect it is these two bearings that are holding me up... anyone know how to remove them (before I get the grinder and a sledgehammer ).

I found when spitting a PG1 it was the gear selector mechanisim that stopped it coming apart.
