Repair or replace?
I had my 2.0 zetec up and running this week just to find a knocking noise from the bottom end. After removing the sump I found play in number 4 big
end shell. I have removed all the caps now and number 4 and 1 journal on the crank are slightly marked.
My question is do I
A. Remove the crank have the journals re-ground and fit some new shells.
B. Try and find another 2nd hand engine and hope that's ok.
C. Buy a brand new engine.
I have already reconditioned the cylinder head on the engine I have now. The advantage of the new engine is I could register the car as new.
What do people think?

If you have the money, I would get a new engine (what are they, 750 quid?)
I wouldn't probably buy a whole second hand engine if you've got a reconditioned head and the engine is in good nick otherwise - maybe a
replacement (used) crank? Alternatively, new short blocks are available on ebay for about 300 pounds..

Bin it and get a crossflow. Seriously I'd probably just fit new shells and get the crank reground but what sort of mileage has the engine done?
Zetecs generally do around 150,000 with no problems but not exactly Locost to do a full rebuild. If you think yours is high mileage or been abused
as PSpirine says new engines aren't prohibitively expensive.

Had the same happen on my old Punto GT.. Buy another lump mate and just swap the heads overs before fitting. That gives you a spare engine to play
with in your spare time..

Try and find an engine that you can hear running. Lots out there in mondeo & escorts. Buying another non running dud would be a mistake.
They are expensive to rebuild so makes no economical sense. Alternatively the Duratec is becoming more available s/hand and would be a better choice.
Good luck.

Its a black top and it was running realy well except for the knocking noise.
I may begin the search for a new engine then.
