Having Bespoke Gearbox Components Machined

Sure, I know this is a 'how-long-is-a-piece-of-string' question, but can anyone give me a best-guess idea at the likely cost for having 4 bespoke gears cut and an input shaft made...

High-hundreds... into thousands... ???

Thanks in advance.

Depends on the size, material and complexity of the shaft, but it its motorcycle gearbox type stuff then I'd be very wary if it wasn't into the thousands.

Cheers guys. It's for an old VW transaxle (bug / bus / Type 4). The standard and 'off-the-shelf' aftermarket ratios are pretty much useless for any engine making its peak power around 6,500 and revving on to around 9,500.

have a word with nsdev. he looked into getting custom ratios for his grasser a few years ago using a Coventry company who's name I can remember but I'm sure they specialize in making gears and gear sets.

wasn't the original Hewland gearbox a VW transaxle with the internals improved
Hewland ...not very locost but might be worth looking into second hand.

What makes you think that there aren't NON-custom gears out there, that would be up to the job?

They don't have to be in a VW gearbox to potentially work...

For eg a gear from Honda for a Fireblade box is somewhere between £90 and £130...
