Would you fit a bigger engine

I have a 1.4 k series escort based striker and I am considering if to fit a larger capacity k series engine or not.
Currently the car is low tax and good on fuel but I seem to have the urge for more power to do this with the 1.4 would cost ££££ with not huge gains where as you can purchase a 1.8 160 vvc engine etc for around £250 - £300.
If I fitted a larger engine I would get more power and torque but pay more road tax and loose a few mpg.
What does everone else think.

You could fit the 1.8 and pretend it never happened, but that would clearly be irresponsible

Don't think i'd ever worry about MPG in a 7
Unless you were using it everyday to travel a fair distance to work

As ever try and budget it out, but the bigger engine has to be worth a look...

id go for the 1.6 and send it to dva. the 1.6 is much more of a screamer than the 1.8!

Seriously though, fit the bigger engine. If you really are more interested in economy and taxation than performance sell the 7 and by a Matiz.

Now there's a thought. Probably higher MPG and insurance but tax would remain the same I guess? But it does sound more interesting then slapping a 1.8 in and Rover kindly provided a turbo setup for just such a thing

how much mpg would you actually lose? might you not benefit from the later design of the k series?
i have a 1.8 k in my gtm and get about 35 to the gallon on short spirited trips and 45 on motorways. i guess the gtm is heavier than your seven but more aerodynamic?

Even a normal 1.6 from a 45 is a better choice it has a lot more extra low and mid-range ummph than the extra 10hp would suggest, I am assuming you already have the normal 103ps 1.4 rather than the low insurance 81ps version used in the base model Rover 25.

The 1.8 isn't near as free revving as the smaller versions and VVC is an extra layer of complication. Advertised MG-Rover engine powers are based on marketing niches not real output a 1.8 VVC 160 produces closer to 150ps than 160ps.

Not overly bothered about MPG but just do not want it to cost me a fortune if I go for a trip out probably would not make a big difference on MPG between the engines.
The turbo engine does sound intresting if not a bit more complex.
I have read that the 1.4 and 1.6 engines do rev more freely due to the stroke but then again a 1.8 would have more torque.

Get a blower from a bmw mini - get the feel of a bigger engine with none of the negatives. And it should be cheapish!

What is required change a 1.4 mpi engine into a 1.6 would it just be change the pistons and liners and fit a 1.6 ecu and injectors.Is it also worth fitting either a vvc head and inlet manifold.

Also intrested to know what is involved for a turbo conversion.

Changing liners is waste of time and money fit a complete 1.6 engine and swap the flywheels, VVC inlet can be fitted to the normal 16 valve head. Just be sure to find a good engine.
VVC exhaust cams can be used to replace both the inlet and exhaust cams on the normal 16 valve head to give a decent boost in power the catch is VVC exhaust cams are like unicorn droppings

id keep looking on l7c. k series motors come up for sale regularly on there but good ones are not cheap. you could almost certainly fit a zetec for less!
i just sold my complete minister tuned 1.4 k with box and all anciilaries for £1600 within a few hours and could have sold it for more.to at least 3 other people.couldnt believe the interest.but it was a cracking motor with around 130 bhp

I know of a cracking 1.8 K series out of an MGF that's for sale. My chum (Trev Borg) on here had it in his MGF. He then sold it to a work colleague of mine to put in a Mini. The engine has sat next to the Mini for a couple of weeks and now blokey has decided he wants to keep the Mini A-series powered!
