pinto dizzy

hi folks

right i'm finally ready to get my engine running but have now hit one big ass brick wall.

apparently my ignition system requires a ignition amplifier modual which the guy who striped the donor car decided he didn't wanna keep ford don't even make or stock the part anymore (engine is from a 1984 sierra)

has anyone else come up against this and is there anyway around it? aftermarket bit of kit that replaces it or something?

it's not a points distibutor it's a inductive something or the other, funny looking thing inside.

any help and i'll love y'all for ever because i just want to hear this engine run now!

If you are using a carb or carbs you are probably better off getting a points dizzy off ebay or some where. you can put the aldon ignitor electronic ignition inside it if you don't want points.

You will need the correct coil to go with it.

If you are using injection then you need to find the amp!

John,

I had the same issue when I changed from the later Sierra set-up which featured an ESCII ecu. I went to a local scrappy and got a module with the associated bits of wiring loom for £10. I also put the coil in my toolbox when no one was looking as well, but don't tell anyone!

Once you have the module it's really easy to wire up. If you need a diagram let me know and I can email it to you.

James, I didn't mean to suggest that points are better - just that I found it easier to get the engine running with a points system.

After talking to various people I understood that my injection dizzy was not suitable for use with my twin 45's anyway.

I actually ended up with an Aldon dizzy with no vacuum advance and an Aldon Ignitor unit - it starts and runs great - (a lot better than when I had points)

On the other hand if john can get his going with an amp from a scrappy then good for him

mark, what kinda price can i expect to pay for the aldon dizzy and ignitor? i've got a pair of 40's sitting in the garage to go on at some point so this could be one of them cases of doing something sooner than i had first planed

nick, i've got the diagram of how to wire up the module as it's part of the vicky green loom diagram but thank you kidly for the offer. just 20 year old sierras don't seem to pop up in scrap yards around here oftern apparently ford stopped using it in 1985

that's what I picked mine up from. They were used on transits and P100 pickups as well and on some 1600 sierras. I think Unipart did a replacement for them.

I would reccommend having a look at

the bits about webers and ignition are really quite good.

If you follow what Dave says you should be able to get going pretty cheaply, and with the vacuum advance disconnected - you will not be able to satisfactorily connect it (I tried!), it explains how to modify the advance curve to get it to suit your engine - You can do this with an electronic ignition dizzy if it has a mechanical advance - my injection dizzy didn't!

I had my points dizzy modified by Aldon

If I recall, it cost about £80 plus the cost of the Ignitor which they supplied at about £65

They weren't too keen on mentioning their modifying service at first, I think that they wanted to sell me a new one at about £300 but when they realised that that wasn't going to happen they offered to modify mine.

It was quite a lot to stump up but I am very pleased with the result.

Hi John

All carbed 1.6 pinto sierra's use a very simple dizzy / ign mod set up, works ok on my 2.0 with twin webbers. Cost £15 for dizzy, ign mod and coil from scrappy

When i was looking for my electric bits to fire up the dizzy i found it hard going looking for old 1600 sierra or P100 pickups,luckily there are plenty of scrapped transits about and they have the same wiring if pinto fitted

you're not wrong about 1600 sierras being rare. since i started looking july 03, in all of yorkshire, i've seen one advertised.
luckily it was the one i bought!

I must have been lucky then, the first scrap yard i went to had 3, but only 1 still had its dizzy and coil
