1600 OHC Vauxhall
Does anyone know a suitable gearbox that would mate up to the Vauxhall 1600 lump, as used on the Nova GTE etc? Will the Manta or Omega box fit?
Been offered one for nothing that's been turboed, but requires rebuild (low compression).

Carlton should fit - and will be easier to find than a manta or omega.Thats what we're using bolted to our 16v gte lump. Bellhousing bolt
pattern should be the same for the vuaxhall family. Ratios would probably be better in the manta box though.

I have the Carlton box on my 1800 SOHC Vauxhall 8v. The only thing you need to consider with it, is that it is slightly wider than the type-9 at the
bellhouseing end. I have wided my tranny tunnel by almost 2 lines (passenger side) to allow for the extra space. You can pics of the gearbox in place
on my website.
Photos in the March set show the uneveness to the footwells to cope with the gearbox.

Cheers, I was thinking they may not fit as I know the 1600 is not the same "familly" of engines as the 1.8 and 2.0 lumps.

The 1.6 out of a nova will be a small block, and the 1.8/2.0L are large blocks. Hence the manta/carlton box wont fit i think, dont think you can fit
the F16/F20 (large block FWD gearboxs) on the 1.6 engine
Custom bellhousing i seem to remember

Lifted from the SBD website...
"The bellhousings that we produce are for coupling the Vauxhall/Opel range of engines to the Ford gearbox. They will suit most of the range of
engines from 1.3 8v to the 3.0L V6. They are manufactured in two basic types, vertical bellhousing are suitable for use when you intend to mount your
engine vertically in your car e.g. Westfields, Caterhams & other car where your installation is tight & you are unable to mount the engine at
its natural 7 degree tilt toward the exhaust. If you use the 7 degree type because of its tilt it gives you more room on the intake side which allows
you extra room for ram pipes & air filters. This is particularly useful when used in Mk1,2 & 3 rear wheel drive Escorts, Chevettes, Opel Manta
& other similar cars where the inner wing is close to the engine & if you have to run a restricted intake, you will lose all the horse power
you have spent so much money getting in the first place. There are 2 lengths of bellhousings the 150mm, which is for use with the Ford gearboxes
RS2000 4 speed & Sierra 5 speed. The 170mm is for use with the Ford V6 gearbox of if you wish to mount the engine further away from the gearbox
& you are having a gearbox specially built with a long input shaft."
I *think* the reason that the gearboxes dont interchange too handily on FWD applications is that the driveshafts are different, but engine/bellhousing
bolt pattern is the same IIRC...
