audi v8 broken cambelt damage
I have/had and audi a6 with 40v v8 out in Germany (I was based out there with the army). Last year I had the cambelt come off the crank at tickover
due to dropping a washer in the wrong place while fiddling with something else causing the dreaded piston/valve contact. Didn't have time to
sort it out as I was off to UK for a course and now it looks like I won't be going back there other then to move my stuff back to UK.
Anyway it leaves me trying to guess as to whether its worth me trying to fix it over a weekend or trailer it back. Its not worth a lot but seems too
good to scrap.
So opinions please as to what the damage is likely to be.
*Bent valves?
*Broken rockers?
*Smashed pistons?
It still runs on 3 cylinders. I'm kind of thinking if I find a couple of 2nd hand heads and bring them over with me I might get away with it as
long as the pistons are ok.

How much is it worth running v scrap value??
But ultimately I reckon best to scrap the poor thing, just add up the bare minimum it will cost in parts (shame you can't check for piston
damage first) and I suspect you are looking at £500-1k unless you get lucky. Too much of a gamble.

Could be a few things really, bent valves, broken valve guides etc etc..
Worst thing would be a bit of valve or broken off bit of guide falling into the chamber causing all sorts of piston/cylinder damage.
Only sure way is taking the heads off and assessing the situation from there..
Good luck,

I believe Audi don't sell anything below the head separately?
Also, I believe the bores are nikasil lined, there will be very few places that can (or will want to) rework those bores? I've got the ABZ (32V)
for my current build - I'd wanted a 40V but didn't want to pay the price - if you have the time and want to you could build up with all
aftermarket items but I suspect it'll be upward of 5K for the rebuild?

That said, you can buy a whole replacement 40V engine for less than 1K on fleabay.

200 for a left head on eBay. If I can find a right one as well it might be worth a punt. Knowing my luck the bore or piston will be buggered though

I have a 40V Audi V8 engine. I paid £120 for it, it's been sat in the garage ever since. If it's any good to you, you can have it for what
I paid.
