Carbed r1 starting woes
My cars been sat a while now in the garage and starting it is becoming a real chore!
I had it running around 3 weeks ago but today it wouldn't properly start and I flattened 3 batteries in the process.it was trying to start and
would run for around 30 secs before cutting out as it was idling at around 400rpm.
As soon as any throttle applied it instantly cuts out and when starter button pressed after it was letting out huge bangs.
Any ideas what to try.ive had new battery and new plugs

I take it hasn't got a choke can u restrict its air intake whilst starting and running for a few minutes .

Dodgy fuel, it has little shelf life these days.
Drop the bottoms off the carbs and see if anything is in their, make sure the fuel pump is doing what it should first though.
The ethonal may have attacked your fuel pipes, could be they are manky on the inside, next time I will use hard lines.

Fuels only been in a few weeks mark! And it ran a few weeks ago.i could easily drain the tank and try again but the lines are all new

Was also going to suggest dodgy fuel
Are you using a TPS ? When these start to fail you will get the symptoms you mention
Have you tried some Easy start ?

I think it may be flooded. I'll take plugs out and turn it over a few times.charge my battery and hope it'll run as I'm testing next
Friday at Blyton.
The car has been stood for a year so it's probably nothing serious

Hopefully it will be ok
New plugs might be soaked aswell now so it might be worth getting another set ready
Carb's could also be worth a check if you don't have any luck
If it fires up ok on easy start you know you have a fuel related issue

There's only 1/2 a litre of fuel in the tank.the fuel lines are about 2' long and I can see it being squirted in when throttle pressed.
I've got a 3rd set of plugs as well but hopefully my 1st 2 sets are still ok
It's a race engine on flat slides if that makes any difference

Unlightly to be the fuel, could still be gummed jets in the carbs as ethonal turns into jelly/water in my experience.
When my car struggles I hit the plugs with a blow torch and get them nice and hot, then install quickly before they cool off which helps it run.

When I leave my Zx9 for any length of time I have to take the carb bowls off as they get gelled up from the additives they put in fuel

a trick my granddad apparently used was to put the plugs in the oven to dry and preheat them...
I suspect that after getting it started, and running for a few mins it will be a lot better.

was it a smooth idle? if
not could be a classic case of vacuum in the fuel tank, - try it with the fuel cap open.

Very lumpy idle. When it's been running before it's been sweet as a nut idling around 1000rpm. Today it was between 350 and 450 rpm but
didn't run for more than a minute at a time!

With any bike engine starting/running issue after it's been sitting my first port of call would be to remove the carbs, take the float bowls
off, remove the jets and needle valve and clean both them and their appropriate sections of the carb body out with carb cleaner and compressed air.
I've left bikes sitting for a few weeks before and come back to gummed up carbs. Doesn't take much!

Well.i took plugs out.dried and heated them.took fuel filler cap off. And still no joy.can only assume it's either fuel or a carb issue!

Try fresh plugs Dan.
My 5jj R1 used to eat plugs. Drying them out didn't really work.
Used to buy them 2 or 3 sets at a time from Halfords!

I got the car running on Wednesday after days of it failing to start. Ran perfectly. Went back up yesterday as I was supposed to be testing today and
it wouldn't fire.spins over just fine but got no spark on any cylinder. Tried spare coil packs and still no joy. I can only assume it's an
intermittent sensor fault?
But there only seems to be throttle position and pickup coil sensors and the cdi ignition module

I think the float needle(s) are stuck at a limited rate...
fuel pools so you can start it
but when power is asked she gets lean instantly.
could also be a pump issue if more than 2 cilinders are lean

Oh, I'm too late.
Does your cdi still have the safety -ground- leads? aka from the clutch/gearboxneutral/sidestand?
On the bike these would interrupt ignition.
Otherwise check if the timing wheel is still magnetic,
and -if you can get your hands on a oscilloscope- check the signal from the Hall sensor

The car has been a very successful race car and has always started eventually. I've had the float bowls off and all is good. But now theres no
spark.i think it could be pickup coil sensor or cdi so I'll check over weekend

Cars been into local Motorsport shop and he thinks it's failed coil packs. So I've got some dyna coils to try!
If anyone's got some good standard items I could use as spares that would be great!
