Questions about ECU and MegaSquirt
2004 2.3 L Duratec engine
What does the ECU do?
Would / Could this be replaced by a mega squirt controller? Do I need to keep the ECU?
Noobie question day!!!
Any links to more information? were I could read up on it?

don't know about that particular engine but in my experiance keep the entire wiring set up from your donor and you will meet the parameters of
your signiture statement the ECU cotrolls all engine functions and will run the most relablly in standard form .any way a 2.3 l in a locost is going
to go quite nicely once you have it up and running then think about mods
best wishes

ECU does ignition and injection.
Can be replaced with Megasquirt, but you'll need one of the variations which does Sparks, too

The donor ECU can nearly always be usd but...You will need to trick it into thinking it is still in the donor with all the hassle that brings.
A good aftermarket ECU will make the install a lot easier. Wiring will be easier and it will allow you to unlock the engines full potential. You will
also get a few good functions like coolant fan control, fuel pump control, rev limiters/shift light and diagnostics functions.
The big advantage overall is it will allow you to control the engine rather than being stuck with what the manufacturer wanted the engine to do in the
donor car.
Have a look at the other ECUs on the market, maybe not as cheap but ones like Emerald are very easy to use (very simple to access using a laptop/PC)
and the tech backup is second to none. They do come up s/h and Emerald can usually supply a map to get you up and running or take a copy of someone
who has the same engine.

Hi dl_peabody,
Good to see someone else using a 2.3 Duratec. I'm using one with a MegasquirtnSpark-extra with some modifications in my MK Indy that was SVAed
with a pinto.
My understanding is that originally the Megasquirt was a simplified, fuel version of a do it yourself controller that was part of the diy-efi group.
Then someone added ignition control using the EDIS system (MegasquirtnEDIS). Another variation was the MegasquirtnSpark. These 2 now seem to have been
rolled into one which is the MegasquirtnSpark-extra. These 2 versions are essentially firmware changes which is easily done using a PC and free
utilities. There are some minor hardware mods for EDIS and some of the other features. With this controller you get coolant fan control, fuel pump
control, rev limiters/shift light and diagnostics functions + others.
For my system I'm adding in the following:
Support for the pwm idle valve, there is experimental code already in the 'extra version.
Thermostat control, the Duratec uses an electrically controlled thermostat to adjust the set point temperature which is a bit high and low for no feed
/ 12v feed conditions.
Knock sensing, again there is experimental code already.
I'm hoping to be on the road shortly, but I seem to have been thinking that for a while
If I'm not mistaken I think that the Masda version uses variable valve timing. In which case the stock ecu probably also controls this.
Have a look at:
Megasquirt and Extra
Hope this helps and good luck with the build.
Cheers,
Colin
