Zetec sump
I know this has probably been asked a million times before and I've no doubt that some smart person will come out and say try the search
facility but I don't want to do that. I'd like to know what people think is the best sump to useon a black top zetec fitted into my Tiger
Avon, from experience and not from talking to the bloke down the fruit and verg shop that had a mate who's sisters boyfriend fitted a so and so
sump to his 700bhp zetc fitted into whatever.
Many thanks in advance
Mike

Raceline is the best Zetec Kitcar wet sump. Current price is £550 ish
There is a guy called Neil Dunne that fabricates a steel one and its the same sort of depth. Stockcar guys swear by him. It has proper clearance for
the starter ect.
Gbs / kitspares do another fabricated steel sump.
Tiger do a cast alloy one but is prone to surge problems.

So did I but you have to supply one to them.

Define best? For me it was a quick chop and weld of the standard sump. My engine only cost £80 though.

I have a modified blacktop sump, i have stuck with it as it is easily and cheaply repairable, and with the state of the roads in devon/dorset/somerset
has taken quite a beating over the years, even with the worst damage i still manged to get home with a decent amount of oil left and no damage to the
alloy part.
I don't get any oil surge with the sump on track or on the road, if i was running slicks it might be a different matter.
My sump is approx 40mm below the chassis and approx 60mm above the road, if your clearance is better, you may have better luck with poor roads and
alloy pans.
With the steel pan cut level with the bellhousing it holds approx 4l, i modified the alloy section to attach the lower bellhousing bolts and to fit
around the starter motor.
Here's some pics of the modified pan and alloy section.

This is exactly how I did mine following the guide. I have had no issues on mine, I fitted a couple of baffle plates in mine to stop surge. Had no
issues with mine but havent done a track day. Road use only but stable oil pressure.
A few pictures and notes writen about it in my build blog.

Cheapest option. The Raceline one is meant tobe the best but for £550 it should be. The Tiger one I had a look at but can't say I was that
impressed and they do have leaking issues too I believe.

Another shout for the DIY mod, that's what i've been running on my Striker for the last two years and for 3 years on my striker before
that!
I cut the metal and then took it to my welder to glue together, cost me all of about £30 and been fine ever since

I couldn't get my modified blacktop sump to not leak after it warped a little bit during welding, I gave up in the end and bought the zetec sump
from kitspares. Its the best price off the shelf, not tried it on the track yet but should be fine.

Modifying the blacktop one is an option but done by the guide it cuts oil capacity to around 3.5 L
I’ve done a couple and got another half done. It can be hard to get enough clearance for some chunky or long starter motors. And I wouldn’t fancy it
on track. All this can be over come.
Silvertop sump as modified by Scholar and Dunnell are getting thin on the ground. For one they are 24~30 years old and for another they are now sump
of choice for the mk2 escorts ect. The irony I am told Scholar don’t offer them any more ?
They are also a pain to fit to a Blacktop as you need the four bearing carrier bolts and some 20mm spacers to mount the windage tray.
So I still say the raceline is “best” but it’s not the only option.

Many thas for all of your eplies, they are much appreciated.
At the moment I have a modified standard black top sump with added capacity wings. Leakage seems to be my biggest bug bear at the minute but
it's so little that I'm probably being my normal anal self.
I think I might have a go at adding an aluminium extension etc to the aluminium part of the black top sump.
The chap in the unit next to mine races an F2 stock car and he uses a Neil Dunne built sump but even that needed two gaskets to reduce the leakage.
I don't think I will ever feel comfortable spending over £500 on a sump, even if it probably is the dogs dodahs.
And anyway a little oil leakage will prevent the chassis from rusting
Now off to order some paint and start on my IVA paperwork...........
Cheers
Mike
