Do they have hydraulic tappets? One sticking a bit?
What year / donor etc. Im not zetec expert but thought there were black tops and silver(??) tops. If you post exact model one of the experts should be
able to help. I assume it was OK before. Has the car been stored fo rthe Winter etc.
My BMW engines used to tick (E30 straight 6), it was injector rail. The test was to hold throttle open at about 3K, tick was not audible, let go and
if it became audible on tickover it was the rail and nowt to worry about. Otherwise it was tappets.

The valves on that engine are a little prone to sticking. I get the same thing sometimes after it has not been run and as conrod says suspect due to a
lifter, one warmed up no noise and performance never seems affected.

Its the same with the vauxhall 16v.... tappets most times or worn cam!
The best way to stop it is to take the lifters out, take them apart, clean it all out and fill back up with oil. Solves the problem 9/10 times

or as was mentioned, could just be the injectors! Depends on how loud the "ticking" is!
