1300cc engine for racing in locost series
Hi all, I am building a car to race in the series and I intend to do all work, build chassis myselfe etc..
I also intend to rebuild and prepare my own engine, I have a standard 1300cc from doner MK2 escort. Can this be upped to GT spec with cam, carb etc..
or are heads, valves or anything else different?
Any other tips greatly appreciated.

Steve,
Head is different. 1300GT has bigger valves.
Not sure on springs & rockers.
I believe you could modify std 1300 to big valves.

The engine can be uprated, but not all of the parts are directly replaceable.
In particular, I am having difficulting mating up the new Webber carb to the old throttle assembly.
I found that the pulley for the water pump is obsolete, but not the one for the crank.
Old bolts shear. Label or bag all your bolts, then take them to your local dealer and say "replace these" before you begin.
Make sure you have the current regs for the series before upgrading willy nilly. Don't want your engine being illegal now do we?

I have ran a copy of last years regs off, not sure if 2002 are available yet.
I have ordered a Haynes book 'Tuning and rebuilding kent crossflows' This should help me.

I thought I would have to replace the seats to run unleaded petrol anyway, so will look into upgrading to GT spec

I may have been incorrect with my statement that valave are bigger.
I was comparing reletive to 1100 from our donor car.

1300GT head is different, as it uses 1600 (standard not GT) size valves, in fact it is the same head! machining is not allowed, so going oversize
inlet on a standard 1300 head may be illegal, note, only exhaust needs machining for ULG. Also 1300GT cam is different to normal 1300, although valve
springs etc are the same (use new springs anyway, you'll gain 500 rpm over 20 year old springs!)

Been reading up on this stuff, but have a question along the same lines
According to Haynes there is a 1300 lc, hc and 2v engine variants.
I have deduced (albeit wrongly) the 2v is the larger valves, diffreent cam and twin venturi carb'd version. Is this correct, and is this engine only
fitted to the GT's?
Also, reading this thread makes me believe I could get the hc / lc engine and fit the 1600 head to get the larger exhaust valves. Again, is this
correct?
