more engine questions sorry

as i said in past posts im building a locost and iv got 1300 x flow with mk2 escort running gear,but i wasnt happy with that so wanted another more powerful engine and on chating to a mate has got a cavaler with a red top 2lt vauxhal engine,and my question is what can i use from the ford and what do i take out of the doner vauxhal,can i use the rear diff from the ford,but can i use the stearing rack from the vauxhal.lots of advise would be a help as im a complete novice to building a whole car.thanks in advance.daz

also if anyone has got any pics or dimensions for engine mounts for the vauxhal engine.

Id suggest to keep the Escort steering rack etc (the Cavalier will likely be power assisted) and just use the Vx engine, probably attached to a type 9 Ford gearbox commonly found in Sierras I believe.

Im sure others more know will confirm (or not) the above as I wouldnt claim to know a huge amount about boat anchor (car engine'd) drivetrains

Depending how u run it youl need the engine and ignition and fuel injection system. The just the bell housing adaptor for the type 9 from a sierra.
Depending on whether u want carbs or fuel injection depends on how easy it is.
The red top is a very good engine.

Then stick with the mk2 escort stuff u have.

The red top engine loam and ECU are easy to seperate from the rest of the car so if you can fit the inlet manifold and tb in the car you could stick with that.

I have a red top with just a panel filter and good exhaust on sandard injection and it was rr'ed at 166bhp

The VX inlet manifold and throttle body is a big lump. You'd need a very hefty power bulge to keep it.

thanks guys im stripping the engine out next weekend,i havent got the bonnet yet but ill fit the engine in and cut to suit.im going to fit the vx with bike carbs my mate has a set so im going to buy them off him apparently i need to fit a plate to get the carbs fitted to the inlet manifold has anyone got any dimensions for this and for the engine mounts as i need to weld these in if im going to get it built before dec.thanks for all your advise,daz

I've done a cad dxf file drawing for the xe head inlet manifold. It's untested for sizes/fit at the moment but if you want i could dimension it and send it to you. Can you open it with your own software?? I could try a screen capture and email it to you. U2U me if you want more info as I'm doing an xe install (slowly) myself. As already said you'll need a bellhousing (£150 ish) . everything else can be used as is. Don't be afraid to ask or U2U any questions you want answered as there are a good bunch of xe fanatics on here.

as the other have said, stick to "the book" chassis and steering wise, the cavvy bits are either no good or mean extra work.

You will struggle to get the steering column connecting link past the std inlet manifold.

Engine wise, bike carbs will be great, you want a set of rejetted R1 carbs.

You will then need an ignition system, preferably mapped, but then you may as well fit bike throttle bodies instead of carbs and inject it.

If not, a 1600 cavvy dizzy will fit the XE head and you can use that for ignition but don't expect to make mega power as the advance curve is wrong.

I am running a secondhand set of jenvey 45mm throttle bodies with a secondhand MBE mappable ecu (£650 for the whole lot, £200 for the bare engine from a calibra) and making 176hp @wheels. (just over 200 @ flywheel)
