My car sounds like a Subaru!

Whilst continuing to try and Tune my megasquirt imbetween work, rain, and other comitments.

Its a Pinto running 2002 Yamaha R1 Throttle Bodies, the sort with the Throttle/CV slides that go up and down when lots of air is passed through them.

Maybe there whats causing it but the car has a rock steady idle etc, but it rounds really like a Subaru when driving it around, Not sure if thats a good or bad thing!.

From what I understand Subaru's sound like that because of the un-equal length exhaust headers.. mine are all exactly the same length as they were before. I know it goes lean when trying to accelerate anything over gently and i'm working on that.

What else do people thing could cause it and could it be damaging the engine?.
Or is it maybe just the new induction noise i'm not used to.

How many cylinders is it running on? It sounds like you are missing a cylinder if it sounds like a Subaru.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

My thoughts exactly Pete.

My car was doing that at the weekend. I had knackered plug leads.

I presume its fireing on all 4, the only way i've checked as a quick test was to Shine an IR thermometer on the exhaust headers and there all within 20DegC of each other.

Although I seem to remember knicking a HT lead when taking off a cable tie.. you might be onto something and explain why its rather sluggish

1 damp plug and 3 dry ones... you could be onto something!

I just hope its the leads and not the coil pack!

Wohooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!! I might just take back everything I've posted about Megasquirt being a Nightmare.
(will reserve full judgement till I can get it to start when warm and run a little leaner)

It looks like No4 Plug was breaking down under load... bloody annoying as they were new ones as well. The Nipple on the end is tight but it still feels like you can rotate it a little either way, like the center core is broken or something.

Just got to find the spare pack of Coil pack plugs we've got instead of the Dizzy type one I've just been for a spin with in.

If thats an NGK return it and demand a replacement - if it's anything else, serves you right for not buying NGK

Told you so.

How can they think it sounds good in a Subaru when you have to break a plug in anything else to make the same noise

Had this exact same discussion with friends many times! One mans "Subaru warble" is anothers "misfiring old banger".

You paid Halfords tax for plugs!! - Ouch. i find them far cheaper from good trade style motor factors.

At least it now goes like a Subaru instead of just sounding like one.

Halfords Tax.... Doesn't apply anywhere near as much when you've got a Halfords Trade Card
