measuring for a fan belt
i'm having problems getting a fan belt that fits.
using some string if i measure round the pullies it measures 825mm
if i use a dress makers tape i measure 890mm around the top.
i have bought a 852a belt, far to small and the 925 far to big with inches of play.
the broblem i have is the chassis rail and the exhaust manifold get in the way so i have about 40mm adjustment on the belt/bracket
how did you measure yours?
prehaps if i buy many of them then i can try and get one that fits.
but i work 50 miles from home and Halfords are the only motor factors around and they are normally as helpfull as a wet paper bag

Perhaps cut the long one to the length that you want and then measure it or take it to Halford for matching up.

What I did was cut up an old belt, that was far too long, (got it from my local repair shop), and rapped it round and marked where it overlapped,
measured and that's the length required. Not always obtainable exact, but next nearest over. HTH Ray

I had the same problem with a pinto Indy. Bear in mind that fan belts appear to have different cross section profiles which allow or or prevent the
belt from sitting snuggly in the pulley groove. Once you've measured try and ensure that the one in Halfords has the same profile or
you'll find it either far too tight or still slightly too slack.
Once you've nailed the right one pin the cardboard sleeve it comes in on the wall so you've always got it as reference.
Hope this helps

Many thanks lads
I like the idea of cutting up the long belt and then measuring, by far the easy option , at least i will an accurate measurement even if
halfords dont stock it.

cutting a belt is expensive way to do it unless it is an old belt.
As you ahve discovered using string or any other measuring device does not help that much but gives a rough idea.
I bought 2 or 3 belts, keep you receipt and halfords will give full refund. The belts seem to come in 50 mm increments so there may be one or two
that do fit - go for the shortest belt you can get to fit.

I bought several and returned them as well.
No quibbles from Halfords.

does the A or B etc (985A 985B) which i assume is the profile make a huge difference?
Could be why my last belt slipped when i thought it was tight
I assume that the pinto requires an A

i cut old belt to get a basic idea. Then went through the rack at Halfords to find 2 or 3 that may be OK. Kept the one that fitted and took the rest
back.
