Zetec Engine Number

Can anyone help, I have bought a 1.8 zetec engine from a guy who bought it from a scrap yard for its sump. I can find the position of the engine number but cannot read it all. There is a label on the cam belt cover with lost of numbers which if I have read it correctly dates the engine to 1999. . The metal around the stamped number has rusted so it shows only parts of the stamped number.I have tried rubbing with wet and dry then rubbing white paint into the letters and numbers but still can't read it. I do not have any info about the car it came from so does anyony know if it possible to get the engine number from the label or as it was from a reputable scrap yard should they have kept a record of where the engine came from .

I had the same problem. I dipped the edge of the block where the number is in my electrolysis bath and left it overnight.

It pulled all the rust off enough to see the number. I then sent the number to Ford who gave me the manufacturing year.

Thanks for your reply. Not got an electrolysis bath yet but will give it a try. May not work as there are a couple of pits where rust has eaten a hole up to .5 mm deep
