crossflow engine emissions

Hi

Can anybody out there help me, I am nearing the end of my build and I have a 1600 crossflow engine installed. My main concern with the sva coming up is the amount of smoke that it produces on start up. The engine has not been used in anger for some 3years now but back then ran really sweet. How can I give the engine a good clear out without taking it out onto the road?

Thanks in advance

Kev

If it's just at start up it should be fine by the time the tester is ready (they're done when hot), "visible smoke test" only as far as I remember.

If it is only at start up it'll most likely be the valve stem seals, easy cheap job on a crossflow.

Firstly: Welcome to another Scot

Has the engine been started much since you put it in? It probably is just the valve stem oil seals so an easy job to do on a crossflow or you can get stuff to put in the oil to swell the rubber in the seals. Somebody clever on here will hopefully tell us what it is

Edit to say, in the olden days when i had Escort engines in Escorts they did smoke a bit on start up but maybe that was just me wearing them out

My x-flow appears to be pretty smoky when started from cold, but that's a combination of choke and vapour, i.e. not much smoke at all. It does smoke briefly if re-started when hot, but that clears within seconds.

I'd guess that a good blat to warm it up should clear any smokiness, unless there's a real problem (valve stem oil seals are favourite, as said above, but stuck rings could be another reason. But that's just being pessimistic!)
