new axle bearings or not?
bearing (lol, you see what i did there?...) in mind Claires thread about a diff which had been steam cleaned, and then needing the bearings
replaced...
I bought me axle a year ago nearly, and done a lot of work to it, like retubing so a lot of cutting, welding, buffing with a flap wheel etc, i'm
sure its full of metal dust and crap. also, before i bought it, it didn't have a diff cover for a long time, so all sorts of crap must have got
in there.
I don't know much about how resiliant bearings are to this kind of thing, but i'd taken the diff out to do all this work, so thats been
sitting in my garage, collecting dust, and stuff... the plan would be at some point after the cars registered and SVA'd, but am i wasting my
time putting it all together, only to have to take it all apart again to replace all again because it whines and will wear out before i even make it
to the test lol

Beware its not a cheap job. A full set of bearings is about £170 for a live axle.
Crown wheel and pinion tolerance is said not to be a Diy job.
If any one knows differant I am all ears.
I was quoted £150 labour and it would take £100 in transport. and a 5~6 week turn around. #guess it must be Rally season.....

the cost of it is whats making me think (and whether i can do it myself...)
www.bearingkits.co.uk (he posts on here sometimes) has a full bearing kit for the diff and pinion (not wheel bearings) for under £100, even still,
thats what makes me think, coz if its going to need replacing, i'll be well annoyed if i have to take the whole thing apart after building it
all up

Which axle? You say it had the cover off so I'm thinking Atlas but you say you've had the diff out so English. But an English has no diff
cover. Or am I barking up the wrong horse?
If I was doing the job (and as it happens I've been faffing about with axles and diffs for the past couple of weeks!), I would wash out the
bearings with paraffin/petrol/diesel/whatever and have a good look at the bearings. If they look worn, replace.

its an atlas
got some red diesel which needs to do something... its been sitting for a long time in my garage.
i'm more worried about them having all kinds of grit/swarf/crap in them somewhere, which will wear them quickly.
the pinion and crown wheel look really good, very little wear at all, so i'm guessing the bearings aren't particularly worn. a good clean
out with petrol/diesel to get any dirt out, and put it back together as is then? see how it goes?
i think maybe, the idea is to just get the car running first, get it registered, then work on sorting all the other bits out

I would wash it well with the diesel and then dry it with an airline if you have one available. If your still worried about it then maybe fill with oil
and drain and refill after a few miles.
My diff was lying around for ages out of the axle but was in a plastic bag and the axle was full of swarf too, but i did the above procedure and have
had no problems.Diffs are really quite a bit tougher than an engine, so should be fine. You could cause more problems dismantling it without the
correct info or equipment.
