pinto torx bolts stages
Afternoon all
Quick question on the torx type cylinder head bolts. It states:
Stage 1 35-40Nm
Stage 2 70-75Nm
Stage 3 5 minutes later extra 90deg
I take it that you go round in the correct order and do stage 1 and then immediately do stage 2 then wait the 5 minutes for stage 3
Only asking as I have a small oil leak from the front of the head and suspect that in all the excitement of getting the engine back together I may of
omitted stage 3
The engine has been run a few times but not for long so would it be okay to do stage 3 now or have I stuffed it up and should really replace the bolts
and do it all again?
Or other option is there anything else I can try to stop this leak of oil?

No -- unless you are 100% certain that you didn't do stage 3. It would be different if the final stage was torquing rather than angular.
What I would do is slacken back the bolts 180 degrees and go through all the stages.
The Pinto is a tough old boot and the head gasket never gave much in the way of problems -- so it should be OK.

I thought torx bolts stretched and could only be used once? so wouldn't slackening off the bolts even by 180degs mean a new set off bolts is
needed?

As above, i'd back them off and redo them. If you have an oil leak it might be worth dropping the coolant out and pulling the head to clean it
the oil from where it leaked before torquing up properly. I'd be concerned about an oil film between the head and block when torquing up leaving
you with a continual oil leak.
Any opinions on the above from practical experience??

Do stage 3 and see what happens. The further 90* always sounds a bit hit and miss to me unless you have an angle gauge for the wrench.

Slacken off and re-torque through the three stages without any other faffing about. It's a pinto not a K series. Huge safety margin built in.

Whole load of myths floating around about stretch head bolts --- most of the ones around can be re-used several times. In reality the
"stretching" takes them only a tiny ammount into the "plastic zone" of the stress strain curve. When reused this
pre-stretching actually makes the bolts actually capable of taking a bigger load before they reach the elastic limit.
It is a bit like Piano wire which is pre-stretched to make "stronger" (ie the stretching increases the elastic limit).
